Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday! I think spring may actually be trying to break through. I saw the first crocus popping up in my back yard! Are you seeing signs of spring where you are?

Since the weather is improving, here’s your tip:

Hang your costumes outside to freshen them.

If you’ve taken my class on caring for your costumes, you know it can be tricky to wash burlesque costumes, so often we just don’t unless it’s a serious situation. After a winter of being stuck inside, garments can be a bit fusty. An hour or so outside in a gentle breeze and sunlight can help improve the way your costumes smell and sometimes even look (that may be a future tip).

Turn them inside out so the parts closest to your body are most exposed to the fresh air. This also protects the exterior from the sun. Extended sun exposure can fade colors. This is why we’re only hanging things out for a little while.

I know I said “hang”, but I know a lot of us don’t have clotheslines, so use a drying rack or a chair to support the costumes. Drape a towel over your support to protect your costume, just in case.

I Made a Thing!

Dear Constant Reader,

I may have mentioned that Devastasia is a very talented artist. She did the illustrations for my first costume book, as well as the second (I know, I know… I swear I will get it out there someday…). Whenever she’s teaching at B.A.B.E., she makes eye-catching ads for Instagram, like this: April Intro

I, myself, am not an artist, let alone a talented one. I just don’t have the eye that some of my friends do and I get overwhelmed by choices. There’s a reason all my Fannie Farmer cooking videos use the same fonts and music. I may say it’s for consistency, but it’s really because I made a decision and don’t want to change it.

While Devastasia will happily make these graphics for any class I ask, I thought “why should she have to do all the work?” So, I found a photo and using Preview (the only graphics program I have), I did this:Spring StripNot bad for my first try, if I do say so.

And if you’d like to join me to learn a burlesque routine featuring a parasol, well, all the info is right there.

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday!Here’s your tip!

When drafting or redrawing patterns, date the final pattern and add any notes necessary, as clearly as possible.

You don’t want to assume that future you is going to remember whether to cut something on the straight-grain or bias or that you want two layers of interfacing.

This tip comes to you from the sleeve pattern on which I helpfully wrote  “+1/2″ sa”. Did I mean the pattern includes half an inch of seam allowance or that I need to add half an inch for seam allowance?

I make these mistakes so you don’t have to!

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Last week was very busy. I taught 3 classes, performed in 3 shows, and the troupe had our annual holiday celebration. So, of course I spent this week sick in bed. Lost my voice and everything. I was feeling well enough to celebrate my birthday yesterday, but I’m still pretty exhausted, coughing, and raspy.

I know I have given you tips over the years to rest, take care of your heath, &c., but I don’t feel like hunting through over 700 tips to make sure I’m not duplicating one. Please forgive me if I’ve said this before.

Schedule some rest breaks in your busy schedule.

Otherwise your body may schedule them for you at a less than convenient time.

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday! And happy Valentine’s Day Eve! We just performed a Galentine’s Day show in Salem, NH last night (Patrons will get an amusing story about it) and will be in Salem, MA tomorrow. I hope you have your tickets because the early show is sold out and the late show is heading that way.

Here’s your tip!

In burlesque you can be anyone you want to be. How about being yourself?

By which I don’t mean be your ordinary, everyday self; do be your larger-than-life, fabulous self.

However, if you are going choose some character, whether fictional or a real person, on which to base an act and spend a lot of time, effort, and money making it a signature of yours, remember that the act is now tied to the fortunes of that character. If its popularity wanes or if public opinion changes, you could be out of luck. Just ask anyone who has a Harry Potter number.

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

It’s Friday again and in Boston it’s snowing again. I hope you have a cozy place to watch the snow or weather the chill. Here’s your tip!

Sharpen your scissors.

You already know to have fabric scissors that only cut cloth, but eventually they will get dull. You want them nice and sharp to slice right through your fabric instead of chewing it up.

Having them professionally sharpened is the best method and will guarantee good sharp blades. However, you can also buy a sharpener. You can get one just for scissors or one that also sharpens knives. They’re easy to use and inexpensive.

If you’ve just noticed your blades are getting a little dull, you can cut fine sandpaper into strips and it will sharpen the blades. Really. It’s not going to fix really dull scissors or nicked blades — those need a real sharpening — but it will keep you going for a bit longer.

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Greetings on a frigid Friday! I can hear the wind howling outside my window as I write this and I hope you are all staying warm, especially those of you in places less accustomed to this level of cold. We had a lot of snow dumped on Boston last week and that inspired this tip, which is for everyone, not just my usual audience of burlesquers.

Clear the sidewalk.

I know shoveling snow is a pain in the ass, but it needs to be done. It makes you a good member of your community. Want to be a better one? Offer to do it for someone who might not be able to do it themself. Make sure curb cuts are accessible and fire hydrants are unburied.

If your landlord is supposed to handle snow removal, that’s great, but do make they take care of it promptly.

I’ve seen people who clean a narrow path from their front door to their car. Not okay. Or the folks who technically clear in front of their house, but leave a big pile between their place and the one next door. Really? Think of other people.

You never know when some poor performer is going to be lugging their suitcase to the venue and face an impassable stretch of snow*. Don’t be the one they cuss out.

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday! I hope everyone who is in the path of the big storm stays safe and warm, especially those of you who might not be used to this sort of weather. Here’s your tip!

Keep a spare supply of pastie adhesive with you.

You never know when you might run out, or forget to pack it, or have a colleague in need. There’s a lot of things we can do a show without, but pasties aren’t one of them. And having the pasties and being unable to attach them is somehow worse than not having them at all.

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday! It’s tip time…

Keep a container for discarded sharps in your sewing space.

Sewing requires needles and pins and other small sharp items. Eventually they dull or break or bend and you are faced with tiny shards of sharp metal. Have a designated container where you can drop them while you’re working and dispose of them safely later.

I keep a pill bottle next to my sewing table for just this purpose. The child-proof cap makes me feel secure that the cats, even Bartholomew the engineering genius, can’t get at them. Lots of items can be repurposed thusly — an Altoids tin, a small jar, etc.

Happy and safe sewing!

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

It’s a new year and it’s going to be tax time soon. That alone sucks, but are you also scrambling to get your information together? Here’s your tip:

Set up a system to record your burlesque-related income and expenses.

Whether you use accounting software, a spreadsheet, or a notebook, that’s up to what works best for you. Also, the schedule is up to you — maybe you want to record items immediately or maybe once a month is bookkeeping day. Just don’t leave it all until the last minute. Start now and future you will thank past you for making it easy.
