Hair Today

Dear Constant Reader,

It’s true confession time. If reading about the ugly side of beauty is going to ruin things for you, I pray you set this missive aside and wait for the next one.

If I can’t be honest here, where can I be? It’s not like hundreds of people read this — it’s just you and me, O Constant Reader.

Many burlesque performers, myself included, like to present a porcelain-smooth appearance of all bare skin. The glamourous truth is that this can involve all sorts of hair removal: waxing, bleaching, shaving, threading, tweezing, sugaring, chemical depilatories, and possibly some secret methods to which I’m not privy. I’m fortunate that most of my hair is fine and fair and my grooming regimen requires only a little effort.

Here’s the true confessions part: like many women, I have some stray hairs on my areolae. You don’t notice, because they’re covered by my pasties. And for Naked Girls Reading, some quick snipping with my embroidery scissors takes care of the issue. But it bothers me.

When I saw a daily deal offer for laser hair removal, I started contemplating. I know a number of people who have raved about it. It’s easy, effective, and doesn’t even hurt that much, they said. Sounded great! Then I learned that my fair hair, usually a blessing, made me ineligible for the procedure. Instead, I took a deep breath and bought a coupon for electrology.

Sounds scary. And it was, a little. They stick a needle into the hair follicle and kill the root with a little electricity. The needle is actually painless. It’s the zap of electricity that feels like you’ve been jabbed with a straight pin. Over and over again. In a delicate area. I had a half-hour session booked, but I was grateful when the technician told me we were done after 15 minutes.

I was buzzing when I left the office. I have to assume the post-tattooing endorphin rush is similar. Honestly, I’d rather get that feeling from being up on a trapeze than getting many tiny electric shocks.

I have a follow up in a month and then we’ll see how much more zapping I need. What lengths I’ll go to for glamour!

Tenderly yours,
M2

BurlyCon: Shopping

Dear Constant Reader,

My head is still awhirl from BurlyCon (and trying to deal with a post-Wrathskellar house), so today’s missive is about something fun and light — shopping!

There was a lot of good shopping at BurlyCon. My unplanned strategy was to hit the vendors early, so as not to miss anything I really wanted and then come back at the very end and take advantage of packing-up bargains.

And this was my haul:
loot

Top row, from left to right:
A fascinator from Palomita Mar. She works in wool felt, so some of her pieces have elaborate cutwork. I dithered about this for a long time. I hate the color yellow, but it really pops against my red hair. When it was still there right before the vendor room closed, I knew it was mine.

A fascinator from Christal Blu Creations. She had just finished making it. Again, the colors looked great against my hair. Scratch pointed out that it was *not* subtle, but I think I have enough subtle in my wardrobe.

Second row:
A bunch of products from Atomic Cosmetics. Some I bought and some were giveaways (and there might be some gifts not in the picture). I think I’m in love with Dr. Jen and her healthy, luxurious cosmetics & skin care. She was closed when I went back at the end of the con, but that just saved me from dropping even more cash. Hopefully, she’ll ship (or come to the Expo).

Glitter eyeliner from Elektra Cosmetics. This was a total steal as part of their “we want to go home with nothing” sale.

Last row:
A hair flower from Amber Ray Accoutrements. I realized I didn’t have a hair ornament to go with my fan dance costume and it was nice to have an excuse to get a flower from Amber Ray. Her table is incredibly beautiful, heaped with sparkling flowers.

An under-g from Juliet. I bought some from her before and I’m quite happy with them, so why not get another? I also have a bikini she made that I think I bought at the first BurlyCon. Maybe someday I’ll even post a picture of me wearing it.

Next is one of the coolest things — fan staves! It’s not the greatest picture, I realize, but they are beautifully shaped – you don’t want to hide these behind feathers! Bordello Labs does beautiful work. I’m planning to get more from them for an upcoming project (shhh….). The necklace of the Victorian lady riding an ostrich was lagniappe.

The leopard print object is a tissue case by Pinky Shines. Pretty and practical (and the perfect price)! I’m glad I bought one right away because they were all gone later.

Not pictured is a tin of Jacqueline Hyde‘s Bad Things tea. I think it’s still in Scratch’s suitcase

Everything is resting on a vintage apron (it’s reversible! — butterflies on one side, purple on the other, with contrasting pockets) I bought from Melissa Flynn. Scratch loves shopping there because she has items for guys — hard to find at many vintage shops. He did extremely well with a smoking jacket and classic Wayfarers. He also picked up some cufflinks and a rhinestoned necktie from Haute Under the Collar.

Perhaps next a report on something less materialistic, like the classes or social events!

Decisions, Decisions

Dear Constant Reader,

In a mere week-and-a-bit, I’m headed to BurlyCon, an annual burlesque conference in Seattle. It’s been hard to think of preparing for that while my head is in The Wrathskellar still (and will be right up until a few hours before I leave).

Saturday night there is a movie PJ party and I haven’t the faintest idea what to wear. Normally I don’t sleep in anything (except a little perfume)! So, I’m asking you, O Constant Reader, to help me decide.

As usual, I apologize for the quality of the pictures as they were taken in my cheval mirror (which I only noticed later was rather dusty. It was the maid’s day off.)

outfit1Outfit number one: Red silk camisole & tap pants. Comfortable and suitable for lying on the floor with feet in the air. Will be ironed before being worn in public. See above note about maid and day off.

outfit2Outfit number two: Red silk slip, trimmed with black lace. Elegant, but requires decorous seating arrangements. Since we are to bring blankets & pillows, I expect there will be flopping about on the floor.

outfit3Outfit number three: Leopard bra, thong, and skirt set. Saucy, but not really sleepwear.

Whichever one is selected will definitely be worn with black marabou mules and possible a sheer black robe, trimmed with black & white ostrich feathers, if that impacts your decision.

So, my Faithful Correspondant, which outfit goes in the suitcase?

It’s not that there is no news…

Dear Constant Reader,

I have so much to tell you about recent events, such as the costume exhibit reception and the steampunk festival, and upcoming ones like the Victory Party. Alas, your Faithful Correspondent has fallen ill and been confined to bed, coughing like a consumptive, subsisting on tea and consommé. Perhaps in a few days I will be able to sit at my writing desk and send you a proper missive.

More Glittering

Dear Constant Reader,

Brian Janes asked if I would post a picture of myself holding his book, It’s All That Glitters, on Facebook. So I did.

It’s a somewhat stripped-down portrait — I’m not wearing any makeup, I didn’t do my hair, and that’s just the outfit I happened to be wearing that day. Then I got the idea for a really stripped down picture…

Expo: Shopping

Dear Constant Reader,

One of the really fun things to do at the Expo is shop! I swear the vendors just wait, rubbing their hands in anticipation, for Betty to make the rounds…

I got a couple of treasures this year including
these vintage gloves from Carmen and Ginger. They’re over the elbow black suede with tulle-lined cut outs surrounded by rhinestones. Forgive the quality of the photo, but it’s hard to take a picture of your own arm. You’ll just have to see them in person.

There’s a particular shade of blue that looks just amazing on me. When I first held up a swatch, Scratch said “never wear any other blue”. If you’ve seen my “Blue Angel” act, that’s the one. Scratch found a pair of earrings in my shade at Sparkle! Sparkle! Boston and I just had to get them.

All the Babydolls told me I just had to visit Pink Elephant and look at their hair flowers. I was particularly taken with this purple number and wore it for the judging at the Main Event that very night.

I also picked up some stockings with lovely lace accents (sorry no picture) and a piece of art for B.A.B.E. There were lots more wonderful things, but I showed marvelous restraint.

A Pleasant Surprise

Dear Constant Reader,

Vote for the Boston Babydolls! The Boston Phoenix has extended voting until the 16th!

There are two things you should know:

First, I enter contests & giveaways all the time. Heck, I’ve been trying to win a KichenAid mixer from The Pioneer Woman for years now. I’ve never won anything. I don’t really expect to.

Second, I have a friend who writes a blog called Erratic in Heels. I think of her as Vita Lightly, former Boston Babydoll, but you might know her as Sarah from Cycle 9 of America’s Next Top Model.

Sarah was offering her first giveaway on her blog and I left a comment. I think it was something witty like “I like free stuff. I also like cake.” (Sarah is rather fond of cake.) And then I forgot all about it.

In the dressing room during Unlucky in Love I happened to check my email on my phone. This was unusual for me — I rarely use my phone for anything but a clock while backstage and there’s usually no service at that theatre.

And there’s mail from Sarah with the subject “You won!”

And that’s how I ended up with this watch.

Holidays at Babydoll HQ

Dear Constant Reader,

I hope you had/are having a happy winter gift-giving holiday, whichever one(s) you celebrate.

We had a small, early celebration in our studio before Evie disappeared back home for a while. Scratch gave all the Babydolls black & white polka-dotted tote bags, monogrammed in pink (Betty and Brigitte are going to have to get creative to tell theirs apart…). Just the right size for carrying rehearsal gear!

I’ve been longing for some decent lounging attire. Something comfortable, yet still stylish, and my mother delighted me with leopard-print pajamas and satin slippers. Just the thing for relaxing around Stately Babydoll Manor on a winter evening.

Scratch is a terribly hard man to shop for, so I was excited to find something just right for him: Baggy Pants Comedy: Burlesque and the Oral Tradition by Andrew Davis. Hopefully he’ll be willing to write a review. And you might even see some new comedy in upcoming shows.

What was your favorite gift this year?

More on Gifts

Dear Constant Reader,

After seeing my gift guide, someone asked me what I wanted for the holidays.

My first thought was “Peace on Earth; goodwill towards man” (name that movie!), but I figure a girl’s allowed to be a little materialistic once in a while…

* Any of the books on the Boston Babydolls’ Library Wishlist (scroll down). Bonus points if you buy them at an independent bookstore.

* Wonderful confections at Secrets in Lace, Fabulous Feathers, Stop Staring, or Vogses Haut Chocolat.

* Tickets to Sleep No More.

but really, more than anything, I’d like you to vote for Scratch in the Burlesque Top 50. It’s for people who have “made an outstanding contribution to burlesque this year” and if you’ve been to The Wrathskellar, you know he has. And then there’s the Expo and the Burlesque Marathon, just to name a couple of his other projects that benefit the entire burlesque community.

Making Up

Dear Constant Reader,

In my everyday life, I’ve been using a black liquid eyeliner for my usual pin-up make up. However, for The Wrathskellar I wanted a more dramatic eye. The liquid liner just wasn’t working for me. I couldn’t get the line even and thick enough. I tended to get big, wet patches, which I’d invariably smudge.

Enter gel eyeliner. This is my new favorite stuff: thick and easy to paint on, dries quickly, and waterproof. I’m sure you all have been using this for ages, but it was a revelation to me, so I’m spreading the gospel. I’m using this stuff, but there are plenty of other brands out there.
