Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Greetings from BurlyCon! Have a tip!

It’s that time of year when holiday acts are getting booked, so…

Get out all the costumes and props for your holiday acts and make sure they are in good condition.

They’ve probably been packed away since the last time you did a holiday show (in past times I would have said “last year”). Check them over and make any repairs necessary. Maybe plan some embellishments or upgrades. If you realize you haven’t used something in quite a while, perhaps it’s time to deaccession it.

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

It’s Friday! How about a tip?

When sewing velvet, only pin within the seam allowance.

Velvet has a lush look and catches the light in interesting ways which makes it a  natural for adding drama on stage. However, the pile can crush easily while you are sewing it and the marks are very hard to get out. Pinning where it won’t show on the outside is the key to keeping your velvet beautiful. And a pinboard, but that is a tip for another time.

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

It’s Friday! Time for a tip!

We’ve got a private Halloween show tomorrow night and the careful way Scratch set up the order of acts inspired this tip.

Make life easier for your stage hands with the show order.

If possible, put numbers with an elaborate set up at the start of a set and follow with a simple one. Put numbers with a complicated clean up at the end of a set. If two performers need a table or other similar set piece (and the acts aren’t too thematically similar), put them back to back.

In Memoriam: Kitten Natividad

Dear Constant Reader,

I hate writing these missives. The death of every Legend is a tragedy. We lose so much of our history with them. But this one cuts very deep.

Photo by John Bilotti at The Great Burlesque Expo.

I saw her for the first time at Miss Exotic World in Las Vegas in 2006. In a voice I never heard before from him, tinged with awe and delight, Scratch said, almost reverently, “That’s Kitten Natividad!” I replied “Who?”

I learned who she was — Russ Meyer’s muse, burlesque Legend, Miss Nude Universe, porn star. And eventually our friend.

I’m usually more than a little intimidated by Legends, but she was so open and friendly that all my apprehensions just melted away. We got along very well, which surprised me sometimes. She was so exuberant and unapologetic, where I am reserved and demure. One year for my birthday she gave me fishnet bodystockings, saying how good I’d look. It took me a little while to get used to the idea, but she was right.

Whenever Scratch and I went to Los Angeles we would visit her and take her out (and she would take my leftovers home). The last trip was the best. She insisted we stay in her guest suite and Scratch made her breakfast every morning. We would sit in her courtyard and watch her crazy kittens race around. The night we left, we took her to dinner at Musso & Frank, our favorite L.A. restaurant and hers too. I think this is the only picture I have of us together.

Then the pandemic came. We would call her from time to time and check in. We always talked about visiting as soon as we could. She would say “And you’ll stay with meeee!” We would assure her we would and Scratch would cook for her. And then we would tell her we loved her. That’s not something I say casually.

She told such wonderful stories about her time in burlesque, in porn, with Russ, but she was just as interested and enthusiastic about we were doing. When Scratch opened the American Burlesque Collection, she was so supportive. One of the exhibits was dedicated to Latina burlesque performers and a big part was devoted to her. I know Scratch did a little video tour for her, but I wish she could have seen it in person.

The last time we were in touch, she told us the cancer had come back. I said I would drop everything and come see her. She said “I’m not going anywhere” so we talked about going out for Scratch’s birthday in November or mine in February.

I wish I had known how sick she really was. Even if she couldn’t have had visitors, I wish we’d called her one more time.

I’m devastated. I can’t believe I’ll never see her again, never hear her wonderful laugh or feel her infectious delight for everything. I hope she knew how much I love her.

She touched and inspired so many of us. Lili VonSchtupp wrote a lovely tribute on her Patreon. Last year Angie Pontani interviewed Kitten for her podcast, The Bump ‘n Grind.

The thing I loved most about Kitten was the unbridled joy she took in life. She regretted nothing that she had done. I cannot think of a better tribute to her than to live life on those terms.

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Today’s tip brought to you by something that happened last weekend…

Want to be a hero? Bring a just-in-case act with you.

Stuff happens and sometimes a performer can’t make a show at literally the last minute and the show is going to be too short. If you have that extra act, you can help fill the void and give the audience the show they expected.

It should be something that packs small and that you know well and can perform in most venues (you know, perhaps not your giant champagne glass bath!). Also make sure you’ve got your music in a way you can get it to the DJ.

Ava Fox was just in a show where one of the other performers had an emergency and had to leave right before curtain. Quick-thinking Ava had the costume for another act in her car, which a stage kitten ran out to get, and the audience was none the wiser.

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Tonight is Absinthe Unveiled! and I’m unveiling a new act with a new costume. I’m rather excited to show you all! But first, your tip:

Don’t stretch yourself too thin.

It’s very flattering to be asked and invited to perform, to teach, to speak, &c. But if you’ve got a lot on your plate and you’re going to have to cut corners to get it all accomplished,  as hard as it is, you should turn the offer down. Doing a lot of things poorly is not going to enhance your reputation.

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Greetings from sunny Florida! This week’s tip is about tipping!

If there’s tipping at your show, make sure the cast, crew, and audience all understand how it works.

I have seen so many methods for tipping: performer goes through the audience with a container (champagne bucket, top hat, trick or treat pumpkin, &c.), stage kitten goes through the audience with a container, performer lets the audience stick money in their costume, audience throws money at the stage, container by the stage, container for each performer by the stage, envelopes at seats, &c. I’m sure there are more I have forgotten.

Make sure everyone knows what tipping method you are using, the cast and crew well before the show, and the audience early in the show, so there are no surprises.

Very importantly, how are the tips distributed? Does each performer keep the money given specifically to them? Or are the tips shared? If so, how many ways are they split? Does the host get a share? Does the stage crew? Again, this needs to be communicated in advance.

Also, don’t forget electronic tipping. Have QR codes or info for all the different payment services available to the audience. If the tips are pooled and split, let the performers know when and how they’ll be getting their share.

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

I’m at the New York Burlesque Festival! But I didn’t want to forget your tip.

When you travel, try to go to a burlesque show.

Not only is it fun to attend shows, it’s good to get outside your usual stomping grounds. Unfamiliar performers and acts are inspiring in multiple ways. Regional differences in performance and production are always interesting (at least I think so!) and may give you some good ideas. And do try to meet the folks involved — you might make a business contact, or a friend.

Last Chance to Vote

Dear Constant Reader,

This is it! Voting for the Golden Pasties ends tonight! It would mean so much to me to win one of those oversized pasties (made by Canova Studios), especially for the 20th anniversary of the festival.

I’m a finalist for the Dorian Gray Award, for the performer who looks younger now than when they started performing and the Producers Dream Award, for the performer who is never late and always sends their music on time (it’s true!).

Voting is super-easy, barely an inconvenience! You have until 6pm (eastern) tonight.

And then we wait until the ceremony on Sunday!
