Friday Tip!

Dear Constant Reader,

This has been a crazy busy week for me: Sunday we performed at the “Pasties for Parkinson’s” benefit, Monday Brigitte & I rehearsed for The Teaseday Club, then of course, The Teaseday Club itself, Wednesday was usual Babydoll rehearsal. Tonight I believe you can find me in the hot tub.

But I wouldn’t forget your Friday Tip!

Don’t get too attached your eye makeup.

Eye makeup, particularly liquidy stuff like mascara and eyeliner, make a great environment for nasty crud to grow. Replace it every three to six months (more often the more frequently you use it). Powdered eyeshadow will last much longer, but creams need to be replaced as above. Regularly sharpening your pencils will help keep the nasties off. Toss it all immediately if you get an eye infection.

Never share eye makeup. Clean your brushes often. Disinfect your makeup. Wash your hands a lot. This is where I plug Dr. Jen’s makeup disinfectant, brush cleaner, and hand sanitizer. Again I swear I’m not a spokesperson for her, just a satisfied customer.

I’m sadly a veteran of an epic eye infection (nothing to do with bad makeup, just bad luck) and it’s left me paranoid. If I even suspect anything is amiss, I disinfect what I can, toss what I can’t, chuck my contacts and lens case, and if I must wear makeup, use only disposable brushes (from makeup to eye, then discard) until I get the all-clear.

Here’s wishing you healthy and beautifully made-up eyes!

Friday Tip!

Dear Constant Reader,

I’m on my way to Toronto, but of course I wouldn’t skip your Friday Tip!

To properly prep your pout, use a little lip balm before you put on your lipstick.

Yes, there are expensive lip primers out there, but a touch of your favorite balm will soften lips and fill in the gaps. I make my own, but I’ve heard stylists recommend plain old Chapstick or Blistex.

And don’t forget to exfoliate your lips on a regular basis. I like Sugar Kisses from, who else, Dr. Jen at Atomic Cosmetics, but you could mix up a little white sugar and some oil (I like almond) and use that to exfoliate.

Kisses,

Friday Tip!

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday! Here’s your tip:

Be subtle with your scent.

Perfume and other forms of fragrance are lovely, but use a light touch. You don’t want to be That Person who has everyone gagging and gasping in her wake. You know who I’m talking about…

If your perfume (parfum, cologne, eau de toilette, &c.) is in an atomizer, spritz the air just in front of you and walk though the spray, preferably naked. If it’s in a bottle, use your finger to lightly dab a touch on your pulse points: wrists, throat, back of knees. That’s really all you need.

You want a ghost of your scent to cling, not an aromatic bludgeon to assault.

I’m all for signature scents (and I wish I could decide on one!). You can always use several products from the same line for a gentle layering effect, like perfume, lotion, and soap. Sometimes you can even find sachets or scented drawer liners.

Don’t wear fragrance of any kind in enclosed places (plane, bus, &c.) or places that are going to get warm (dance rehearsal, yoga class, &c.) It’s just polite not to overwhelm your compatriots.

Friday Tip!

Dear Constant Reader,

Today’s Friday Tip follows up last week’s. Besides moisturizing like crazy, you need to…

Exfoliate!

(If you are that sort of person, please imagine it said in a Dalek monotone).

For beautiful smooth skin, especially in the winter, you need to gently remove the layer of dead, dry, dull skin. And if you exfoliate before shaving, you get a closer, smoother shave. So why wouldn’t you?

Twice a week I use Dr. Jen’s Five Fruit Face Wash*. For other body parts I use a homemade sugar or salt scrub. It’s so easy to make yourself, as my students at The Great Burlesque Exposition of 2013 discovered.

I use sugar scrub on more delicate skin, like hands and legs. Salt scrub is for rougher spots, like feet, especially heels. Don’t use these scrubs on your face!

Here’s my sugar scrub recipe:
1/2 cup white cane sugar
1/4 cup oil (jojoba, avocado, or olive are all good)
4 drops peppermint essential oil
Mix them all together in a jar. To use, wet your skin and then smooth on the sugar scrub. Let it sit a couple of minutes if you want (it might start to tighten up & tingle a little), gently rub into skin, then rinse off. Be careful if you’re using this in the shower as the oil makes things a bit slippery.

Perhaps anon I’ll share my special salt foot scrub.

*I have no affiliation with Atomic Cosmetics. I just like their products. A lot.

Friday Tip!

Dear Constant Reader,

Vote for The Boston Babydolls for “Best Theatre Group” and B.A.B.E. for “Best Dance Classes“!

Buy your tickets to The Teaseday Club on July 9th in my name! If I sell the most tickets, I’ll reward my supporters with a special photo!

Happy Friday! I hope all Americans reading this enjoyed the Independence Day festivities. Everyone else, I hope you had a nice Thursday. Here’s your tip!

Cover skin imperfections by neutralizing with a concealer in the opposing color.

*Mint green covers red, like zits.
*Yellow covers blue, like fresh bruises.
*Pink covers yellow, like late bruises.

Then you can cover with your regular concealer and then foundation. No one will be the wiser!

Here’s your tip!

To prevent raccoon eyes in the morning, wash your face first, then use eye makeup remover.

I don’t know why this works, but it does. Ever since I started cleansing this way, I haven’t woken up with migrated mascara around my eyes. I like to give my face a quick splash after using the remover, just to get any traces of anything off my skin.

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday! Here’s your tip!

To zap a zit, dab on a little toothpaste before bed.

Seriously. It works. You’ve got to use paste, not gel, and you should make sure to put it only on the blemish, not on the surrounding skin. The pimple will be dried up in the morning. I’ve had great results more times than I can count. Wait… I mean, *my* skin is perfect. I never get zits. No, never. I have a friend, yeah, that’s it, a friend, who has had great results with this trick.

Friday Tip!

Dear Constant Reader,

We were all shocked and saddened to hear that The Boston Phoenix is shutting its doors after 47 years. This is your last chance EVER to vote for The Boston Babydolls for Best Burlesque from The Phoenix. And Jennifer Pelland for Best Author. And anyone/anything else you think is swell.

It wouldn’t be Friday without a tip…

Remove your makeup before you go to sleep.

No matter how tired you are! Your skin needs a chance to breathe. And as long as you’re taking the time to take your makeup off, you can surely spare a moment or two to moisturize. I like The New 20 Night Cream from Xerion Skin Science.

Friday Tip!

Dear Constant Reader,

Please vote for The Boston Babydolls every day!

Your Faithful Correspondent has the sniffles, but before I curl up once again on the daybed with Albert the Manor Cat, I wanted to give you your Friday Tip.

Powder your face after you line your lips but before you put on your lipstick.

It helps the lipliner last without dulling your lipstick.

Review: Retro Makeup

Dear Constant Reader,

Please vote for The Boston Babydolls every day!

And while you’re doing that, please also vote for Jennifer Pelland for Best Author. She is a science fiction writer (and belly dancer), author of the novel Machine & the short story collection Unwelcome Bodies, and her fiction has appeared in numerous anthologies. She’s lost the Nebula award twice (once to Harlan Ellison), so let’s stop that nonsense. Besides, what’s that Lehane guy done lately?

Retro Makeup: Techniques for Applying the Vintage Look by Lauren Rennells.

I’m very happy with Vintage Hairstyling: Retro Styles with Step-by-Step Techniques, so I was pleased to see Ms. Rennells had a new book. Once again she has produced a book full of fabulous photographs and step by step instructions. Retro Makeup contains information about all the basics of applying makeup, like contouring, grooming brows, and lining lips, and information on the tools of the trade. There’s even a section on the best lipstick colors for your skin tone.

Her scope is the 1920’s through the 1950’s. There’s a great deal of historical information on makeup styles and cosmetics. You’ll learn about tanning, war-time makeup rationing, and why the most popular shade of powder was called “Rachel”. Not only is there a guide to applying false lashes, she shows the appropriate style for each decade. The book is peppered with photos of vintage cosmetic packaging and tools. The beauty fad sidebars are fun — will rouged earlobes ever come back into fashion?

The decade by decade chapters highlight brow and lip shapes as well as hallmark colors. There are only a few “looks” in each chapter, which may be initially disappointing, but it’s really an excuse for experimentation. Makeup is so intensely personal, dependent on skin coloration and face shape. There’s more than enough instruction for the reader to make up her own face in a historically accurate way that flatters her.
