RuffleCon 11/11

Dear Constant Reader,

For third year we were hired to perform at RuffleCon, an alternative fashion event in Stamford, CT. It’s always such a good time, but I think this year was the best. In the past the convention has been in October, so we were crazed with Wrathskellar preparations. They’ve moved the dates into November, which was saner for us, but it meant I missed BurlyCon for the first time in about 5 years. We were also moved to Saturday night rather than Friday, which gave us a bigger audience.

Everyone headed down pretty early to enjoy the convention offerings. In the late afternoon I taught my corsetry class. Sadly, I was opposite one of the many fashion shows, but most of the ladies I was traveling with came to class, eager to learn about corsets.

Before the show, we had a lovely, relaxed dinner at a near-by Mexican restaurant. Scratch has an excellent restaurant sense and once again picked out a terrific place. After a stop at a liquor store to gather post-show wine, we returned to the hotel to get ready.

The show was a lot of fun and the audience was amazing. They were yelling, screaming, and cheering so loudly. We had a few technical issues, to be honest. There were constant problems with the music (songs starting early or late or just wrong or once two songs playing simultaneously), but they were resolved quickly every time. And we had to reconfigure most of our acts to the runway stage, which was really set up for fashion shows (narrow stage with a long runway), but we made it work.

I’m not going to do a blow by blow of the show because I couldn’t see anything from backstage. Here are a few notes.

Nicole and I opened the show with “Mistress & Maid”. When I snuck onto stage, an audience member yelled “someone’s going to get a spanking!” How did they know?

No surprise, but they loved Artemisia, especially her singing voice. They went absolutely berserk when she hit those long high notes in “Creep”.

Our special guest Mister Twister from Chicago was extremely popular with the ladies.

Betty did a striking striptease with her new LED Wings of Isis to great acclaim.

My costume for “Moon Over Bourbon Street” was further decorated and I made a new pair of strappy undies just for this show (with lots of patient help from Scratch — I can’t pin elastic over my butt by myself.) At one point I was covering myself with the fans and someone yelled “Stop teasing me!”

We closed out with “Booty Swing” which had brand-new sparkly jackets and light-up staves with LEDs and fiber optics! We try to go all out on the costumes and props for these folks.

After the show, we all went back to our hotel room for wine and snacks and decompressing. I made a post-show video for my Patrons, as it was too dark and too noisy backstage. Scratch asked someone an important question, which will be the topic of another missive.

I admit that I was sinking lower and lower into bed as the merriment went on, but everyone else was still energetic and went to the dance party. I heard that Betty absolutely broke the dance floor with her all-out Old School Goth moves and she had a devoted ring of admirers dancing around her.

The next morning we had a fabulous brunch and then most of us went shopping and spent a lot of time thanking audience members who telling us how much they enjoyed the show. Several of the ladies hit the consignment shop and found all sorts of treasures including Devastasia’s first corset. Scratch taught a class on Victorian Parlor Magic which was remarkably well attended for so early in the morning. Perhaps because he plugged it at the show and promised to reveal the secrets of how he pulled so many items from thin air. And then we hit the road to be back in MA in time for rehearsal!

Busy Weekend

Dear Constant Reader,

Wrathskellar Tales opens on Thursday, so this is crunch time and we should be working round the clock in the space. Instead we did two traveling shows back to back.

Friday evening saw us at RuffleCon, an alternative fashion conference in Connecticut. Some of us were there last year and were delighted to be invited back. We love showing off some of our finest costumes at this event. Because they specifically asked for a male burlesque dancer, we were pleased to share the stage with Mister Twister, visiting from Chicago.

This year the show was at 8:30 pm, rather than late night, so the audience was thinner and much more sober. Still, it was a great time and the audience enjoyed it. The earlier time slot mean that some of us packed up and headed out right after so we could get a few hours of work on Wrathskellar Tales the next day. I was sorry to miss the themed cocktails, the vendors, wearing a petticoat, sleeping over and having breakfast with the other BeauTease. Still, waking up in my own bed was worth getting home at two in the morning. And I had a costume to finish.

Saturday night we headed north to New Hampshire and Another Anime Convention. We had been invited the entertain the “Educating Sherlock” panel attendees with a Victorian Bordello show. This was a ton of fun! We carefully curated a show to fit the theme and Scratch introduced us as the various offerings in Mistress Irene’s House of Ill Repute.

  • Pearl did a sweet strip with a parasol to Flanders and Swann’s “Have Some Madeira, M’dear”.
  • I did a fan dance, of course.
  • Brigitte performed one of The Broad’s drunken acts. It’s subtly different when Brigitte does it then when The Broad does…
  • Devora did a beautiful bubble dance en pointe with a huge balloon.
  • Scratch preformed a minor miracle, appropriately enough, using ropes.
  • Betty laughed in the face of danger as she cut her clothes off with a wickedly sharp knife.
  • Brigitte showed her artistic side as a photographer in “Still Life (with Banana)”
  • Pearl and I closed things out the perennial favorite, “Mistress & Maid”. It was kind of required for this crowd with the spanking and all.

And then there was chocolate in naughty shapes before we had to head back to Boston. We had a fantastic time and our hostesses wrote a glowing review which delighted us so.

And now it’s Wrathskellar Tales all the time. We open on Thursday! Do you have your tickets yet?

An Exhausting Weekend

Dear Constant Reader,

It has taken me this long to report on my weekend as I was completely wiped out! It was a great weekend, but a strenuous one.

Friday night The Boston BeauTease were engaged to perform at Rufflecon. I knew it was an “alternative fashion” event, but that did not prepare me for the acres of ruffles, lace, and petticoats worn by the attendees. It was predominantly Lolita fashions with a smattering of goth, steampunk, and Victoriana styles. I wish I had taken pictures to share with you the remarkable confections I saw walking around. To the right is a random photo from their fashion show, just to give a small idea.

We had been asked for a show that was a little Halloween-ish, for elaborate costumes, and for a male stripteaser. So, we brought along a couple of numbers from The Wrathskellar (preview tomorrow!), some of our finest costumes, and the performer who plays Klaus in The Wrathskellar, under the nom de strip of “Charles River”.

The audience was marvelous! We had a wonderful time performing for them. In particular, they went completely berserk over “Charles”. To no one’s surprise they loved Devora’s “Creepy Doll”. It was a perfect choice for this ruffle & doll-loving crowd. Betty & I got a lot of appreciation for our costumes (made by her, by me, and by Catherine D’Lish). You can see Betty’s new Theda Bara-inspired costume at The Wrathskellar. It’s quite remarkable.

It was a midnight show, so morning came very early. After a delightful breakfast, we took a turn through the vendors’ room, where I felt rather underdressed with only my single modest crinoline. I might have acquired a new tea wallet…

As much as we might have liked to stay in the fantasyland of ruffles and frills, we had to head back to Boston to get ready for load-in for The Wrathskellar first thing Sunday morning.

My day started with a private fan dance lesson with Elsa Riot at B.A.B.E. and then Eva (aka Blanche) arrived to help me pack up all the costumes & props and load up the car.

So much work had to be done, like building and painting stage platforms, hanging lights, making new curtains &c. It was all hands on deck and all the cast & crew pitched in. I’m not entirely certain what all was going on in the theatre as I had my own little project.

The tech closet had to be magically transformed into The Diva’s dressing room. I opened the door and my heart sank. It was full of boxes, lighting and sound gear, and all sorts of junk. I metaphorically rolled up my sleeves and got to work. I only thought to take a picture *after* I moved the boxes of our lighting gear out, cleared a shelf, and removed some of the 50 or so microphone stands.

You aren’t going to believe the transformation. That is, if you’re one of the lucky guests invite into my dressing room for a chat…

And after all that hard physical labor, we still had to have rehearsal. Well, that’s why they call it “hell week”. Ah, well, as they say, I can sleep when I’m dead.

I hope to see you in the audience. It makes all the work worthwhile.
