The Teaseday Club 9/10/13

Dear Constant Reader,

The Teaseday Club met again on Tuesday, September 10th with hostess Sarah Blodgett. 6 months of teasing!

Scratch was at The Boston Theatre Expo, but we were in good hands with Maddy the Stage Manager, Hunter, Kendra, and Jon in the booth, Stella as Stage Kitten (and what an outfit!), and yours truly in the box office. That means I didn’t get to watch much of the show in the theatre. Fortunately, there is a monitor in the lobby, so I did see some of it. But my usual descriptions of the acts are going to be extremely sketchy.

Frankie Merlot of the Wortown Bombshells was taking photos and I’ll share them with you when/if I can.

Set 1
Vikki Likkerish opened with her signature Painted Lady act to “Black Velvet”.

Samara, a bellydancer, performed to “Sail”.

Beau Blush performed a balloon pop act to “Jump in the Line”.

Rory Raven is a mentalist. He had two people pick a book from a stack of several and pick a random word from each. And then he proceeded to read their minds and discover the words.

Set 2
Emily Hecht sang something fabulous. (I don’t know which song; I was in the box office)

Beau Blush did a fan dance to “Fever”.

Sarah Blodgett, Comedy’s Funny Honey, gave us a little taste of her stand-up act.

Brigitte Bisoux did a sultry striptease to “Caramel”.

Samara danced to a remix of “Feeling Good”.

Set 3
Rory Raven did a little reverse mind reading. During intermission he had picked a card and flipped it so it would stand out in the pack. Then he had an audience member come up and read his mind to determine what the card was. She eventually nervously selected one. He riffled through the deck to find the one card with its back showing and it was the very card she had chosen!

Vikki Likkerish performed her etherial striptease to a dreamy version of “Addicted to Love”.

Emily Hecht returned to sing “Mercy On Me”. She has got a great set of pipes!

Brigitte Bisoux finished things off with an energetic striptease while tap dancing to “In the Mood”. She can twirl tassels while she taps…

And who won The Great Teaseday Cookie? No shock, it was Brigitte!

I hope you’ll join us again on October 8th!

The Teaseday Club 8/13/13

Dear Constant Reader,

The Teaseday Club opened again this past Tuesday, again not hosted by John J King (trust me, this gets funnier the more months you attend). Instead, it fell to our own Mr. Scratch to keep things moving along. Honestly, I think even if, by some miracle, John were available, Scratch would have taken this month as it marked Evie Sphinx’s last performance (only for a while, we hope) as she goes off to complete her degree.

I was in the audience this month, with a video camera, so perhaps in the future I can share a little of the fun.

(All photos from Mystic River Studios by Rich Jarvis Photography)

Set 1
Delilah Spring of The Tasty Pasties opened up the show with her fan dance to “The Mooche”. Delilah was one of my fan dance students last year and I think it shows in her performance. At least to me. I could recognize the moves I taught her and the ones she picked up from watching me.

Anthony Scibelli provided us with a stand-up comedy set. He’s a very funny guy: just Google his name + “snozzberries”.

Devora Darling performed a number from A (Re)Movable Feast which we call “Cupcakes”. It has many of her favorite things: a pink frilly costume, dancing en pointe, and a bra covered with soft-sculpture petit-fours. I know, I know that gives away the punchline, but she’s so fond of it. I think she’d wear that bra all the time if she could get away with it.

Stella Diamond sang “Paper Moon”, as she does in The Fine Art of Burlesque (last performances this weekend in New Hampshire and Maine). The lovely vintage gloves were a find from our trip to Cleveland, purchased from Miss Holly Hock at the Ohio Burlesque Festival. Stella got big cheers during the dance break in the middle of the song even though she didn’t take a thing off.

Set 2
Dagny Vanderlust of The Tasty Pasties performed “Bad Things“. I love this number because I saw it grow from an idea to a stage-worthy act in B.A.B.E.’s “Burlesque Your Way” class. I think Dagny tried out at least 4 different pairs of shoes over the life of this routine, from rhinestoned stilettos through bare feet to character shoes, before deciding on the cowboy boots. By the way, her final reveal is awesome and it’s *after* her bra comes off.

Krupp and Bubbles began with a little slight of hand from Krupp and ended with a little demonstration of the art of misdirection from Bubbles.

Evie Sphinx danced to the song Amor Fati from the new album, Softly Swooning World by Samantha Farrell, who was in the audience. Although the act was brand-new, observant fans might have noticed that she was wearing most of her “Smiling Undertaker” costume from The Wrathskellar 2012. A whole bunch of Evie’s Introduction to Burlesque students came to the show and provided her a personal cheering section.

Then some more comedy from Anthony Scibelli. He’s a writer at Cracked.com (one of my favorite time wasters) and you should check out his stuff.

Stella Diamond looked like a good girl, but as the song “Whatever Lola Wants” began playing, she gradually shed her inhibitions along with her clothing. I’m not sure which Stella enjoys more, the silly hat she wears or that the naughty magazine that gets her going is gay porn bought at a discount (it was ladies’ day at the sex shop).

Set 3
Amber BuTane of The Tasty Pasties teased all the “Momma’s Boys” in the audience with her amusing strip, which included twirling fake saggy boobs. And Amber’s actual mom was there to see her daughter in all her glory. Mother BuTane both did Amber’s hair *and* captured Mr. Scratch’s heart.

Krupp and Bubbles did a little mind reading. They had the audience toss a deck of cards randomly around and whoever caught it would flip through and pick a card, then toss it to someone else. Some of those tosses were more like pitches and many of the catches were fumbles. It was a little worrying… But there were no injuries, at least no major ones. Six people were brought up on stage and six cards were correctly named, although two of them required a little special attention.

Delilah Spring of The Tasty Pasties returned with a second fan dance plus a little striptease to “My Man”. Some of the Boston Babydolls (names withheld to protect the childish) have an awfully juvenile sense of humor. During rehearsal before the show, Kendra the Sound Gal called out from the booth “Delilah, do you want to do my man?” and there was some snickering from a particular corner.

Devora Darling, Evie Sphinx, and Stella Diamond in “A Harlequin Romance”. This act was created for Unlucky in Love (and was the only number in that show to use recorded music). They performed it again at The Expo 2012 to such acclaim that The Shanghai Pearl wanted to award them her trophy (but it has to go to one of the acts in competition). I was so happy to see it one more time. It’s a lovely blend of commedia dell’arte (from Scratch), ballet (from Evie and Devora), striptease, and classic comedy (a la Sid Ceasar and Nanette Fabray). They got a standing ovation.

The next meeting of The Teaseday Club will be September 10th. See you there!

The Teaseday Club 7/9

Dear Constant Reader,

Vote for The Boston Babydolls for “Best Theatre Group” and B.A.B.E. for “Best Dance Classes“!

The Teaseday Club met again on Tuesday, July 9th with hostess Sarah Blodgett and the All-Girl line-up! Once again it was a huge amount of fun. It’s a delight to share the stage with such a diverse group of talented performers.

All photos courtesy of Mystic River Studios by Rich Jarvis Photography.

Set 1
Peril S. Curves started things off with a little Star Spangled Burlesque. I hate to spoil surprises, but the joke is too good. Peril’s pasties have pinwheels on them. She used to use an electric fan to make them twirl, but it was too complicated and prone to technical difficulties. So, she asked Sarah and our stage kitten to provide the breeze. As Sarah said, it wasn’t the first time someone asked her to blow them at a show. But it was the first time she said yes!

Sari Kalin presented a little Porch-i-oke. What’s that you ask? It’s a sing-a-long lead by Sari on her accordion. A couple of audience members volunteered for enthusiastic participation on stage, wearing large signs that designated their purpose, like “RING” for the one with the cowbell. And everyone sang “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” with the help of their handy lyric sheets.

Fonda Feeling brought some Game of Thrones-themed burlesque. I’m afraid I can’t comment more that that as I’m woefully ignorant on the topic (I know, I know, I’m probably the only person who isn’t reading the books or watching the show). Just enjoy the picture.

Baseema performed a bellydance with zills (that’s the Turkish name for finger cymbals. Consider the day lost in which you learn nothing.) We’re awfully glad she could join us when the previously scheduled bellydancer was injured. I was backstage getting ready, so I sadly didn’t get to see her dance.

champagne on iceMina Murray (that would be me) presented Champagne on Ice. I thought it was appropriate for the hot weather we had been having. Although presented with a bottle of champagne, I’m much more interested in the ice! The picture shows me just having removed and tossed one stocking. Apparently I got some good range on it because I had to hunt around after the show to find it. It had landed *behind* the stage.

Set 2
Kitty Drexel opened the second set by singing “Touch-A, Touch-A, Touch Me“. That was an audience favorite!

Fonda Feeling‘s real love is circus burlesque. As well as stripping, she also performed acts of balance and flexibility that were quite astonishing. It’s even more awe-inspiring when you know that (as she puts it) 3 years ago she couldn’t touch her toes. The music was Undisclosed Desires, which was pretty appropriate.

Sarah Blodgett, comedy’s Funny Honey, gave us a little taste of her stand-up act.

Vikki Likkerish presented her signature Muff ‘n’ Mix act in honor of her birthday, just days before.

Baseema stunned the crowd by dancing with two swords. I’ve seen a lot of bellydancers use a sword before, but Baseema’s dance just took my breath away. Her skill with manipulating those swords so powerfully and yet gracefully was simply incredible.

Set 3
Peril S. Curves opened the final set with a debut act! She came out looking just like Barbie. Do you know what Barbie looks like after you take her dress off? Yes, that’s exactly how Peril appeared! Then she removed that layer… I’m not going to spoil this one because it’s brand-new, but you have never seen Barbie look that way!

Kitty Drexel returned to sing “A Call From The Vatican“. She was clad only in a button-down shirt, so I’m not sure how attentive some of the audience was to her singing…

Vikki Likkerish also presented a new act. It was an etherial striptease with layers of pink chiffon to a version of “Addicted to Love”.

Sari Kalin brought back Porch-i-oke with “Love is the Drug”.

fan danceMina Murray closed out the show with a fan dance to “Harlem Nocturne“. I know a lot of burlesquers roll their eyes about this song being a cliche, but I love it.

And who won The Great Teaseday Cookie?

Me! Brigitte will be so proud. If you bought a ticket in my name, expect to see a little thank you in your email soon.

The next meeting of The Teaseday Club will be Tuesday, August 13. See you there!

Return to The Teaseday Club

Dear Constant Reader,

Vote for The Boston Babydolls for “Best Theatre Group” and B.A.B.E. for “Best Dance Classes“!

I spoke too soon! You will not be seeing me in the audience at The Teaseday Club on July 9th. I’ll be on stage!

Buy your tickets here and don’t forget to buy them in my name. Brigitte Bisoux will be in Europe so there’s actually a chance I could get the Teaseday Cookie!

To tempt you, here are photos from the last time I was onstage at The Club:
Mina Murray Minnie the Moocher 9Mina Murray My Room 6

I haven’t decided which acts I’ll be performing yet. Any preferences?

The Teaseday Club 6/11

Dear Constant Reader,

The Teaseday Club opened to the membership again on June 11th, a rainy evening. But spirits were not dampened, perhaps because of the fine spirits at the bar.

Scratch hostingThe host for the evening was supposed to be John J King (the warped mind behind From Denmark With Love), but something incredibly complicated happened involving high-stakes Pai Gow, gangsters, and a sea turtle, and at the last minute he couldn’t make it. Fortunately, Scratch was planning to be the stage manager and is something of an experienced MC. However, in the last-minute scramble, he forgot something…

(All photos from Mystic River Studios by Rich Jarvis Photography)

Set 1

Brigitte Still LifeBrigitte Bisoux, as Queen of Teaseday Sales opened the show. In a preview of The Fine Art of Burlesque, she appeared as a painter frustrated by her still life of a bowl of fruit. Fortunately, she managed to find a composition that satisfied her artistic soul *and* got her hot & bothered.

Matt 2Matt Donaher, a very funny guy provided us with a stand-up set. I could possible do his jokes justice in writing, so I shan’t try.

Emily 1Emily Hecht was another last-minute addition when Zehara Nachash was unable to perform. Emily has a powerful, powerful voice and she sang “How Long Has This Been Going On?”.

Malik 1Malik!, a comedic magician, baffled the audience with a series of rope tricks. He started with 3 ropes of different lengths. And then they became three ropes of the same length. I don’t even remember all what he did. One rope became an endless loop of rope, which somehow ended up with a knot in the middle. Very skillfully done.

Cheeky DeVine 1Cheeky DeVine is a brand-new burlesque dancer. In fact, this was her first appearance! What a treat to see the debut of a virgin performer. And such a strong performance too! Dressed like an adorable drummer-girl, she performed to “Countdown“. She is currently in the chair dance class at B.A.B.E. and I’m looking forward to seeing what she brings to the stage next.

Set 2

Stella MoonglowStella Diamond performed her “Date Night” number to “Moonglow“. Although Stella looks the perfect good girl, her boyfriend’s jacket does some awfully naughty things to her.

LucieScratch, as I mentioned, hadn’t planned to be on stage. And so he hadn’t prepared anything for the bit when the host gets a turn on center stage. In this picture, the lovely Lucie Luxe, stage kitten (and B.A.B.E. instructor), presents Scratch with a mail-order magic trick, which had fortunately just arrived.

Cheeky Devine 2Cheeky DeVine returned shackled with a rope which she twisted around as she writhed to free herself, occasionally displaying the scarlet A on her shoulder. The music was “Bottom Of The River“.

Emily 2Emily Hecht sang “How Come You Don’t Call Me?”, prompting Scratch to point out that she sold her soul to have such a beautiful voice, but fell under a curse. She can only sing songs with questions for titles.

Corinne 1Corinne Southern came all the way from Rhode Island to strut to a tango (I think it was an instrumental version of “El Tango de Roxanne”, but don’t quote me on that). She did a classic evening gown strip, including stockings, and ended teasing with peacock feather fans.

Set 3

Stella SongStella Diamond doesn’t just strip; she sings too! Tonight she regaled us with “Always True to You” from Kiss Me Kate, a very funny song about infidelity for profit.

Matt DonaherMatt D. presented another comedy set, just as funny as the first.

Corrinne 2Corinne Southern also sings (a lot of talented singers this night!), but she also strips while she does it. In classic Marilyn style, she stripped out of a pink dress while singing “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend”.

Malik 2Malik! asked a volunteer to hold a balloon and then another one for a dollar bill of any denomination. When he asked her to sign her name on her single, she commented that it was a federal crime. Turns out she’s a lawyer for the Federal Reserve! After using the dollar bill in a couple of tricks, it vanished completely, only to reappear inside the balloon. Next he asked for a volunteer for a card trick involving mentalism, which despite having to coax (nay, pry) responses out of the volunteer, was still amazing and funny.

Brigitte AlcoholBrigitte Bisoux performed one of her acts as The Broad from last year’s production of The Wrathskellar to “Alcohol“. Typecasting? Maybe.

And the question you’ve been waiting for… Who won The Great Teaseday Cookie?
Brigitte Cookie
What a shock! Brigitte Bisoux!

Curtain Call
Curtain call!

The Teaseday Club will be open the second Tuesday of every month. That means the next one is July 9th. You’ll see me in the audience for that one!

The Teaseday Club 5/14

Dear Constant Reader,

The Teaseday Club met again the second Tuesday of May. The audience was huge and enthusiastic! I was pretty enthusiastic myself as the line-up included 3 Boston Babydolls and 4 B.A.B.E. alums. Scratch again hosted the show.

Set 1
Beau Blush, founder of The Wortown Bombshells, started things off with a balloon-pop dance to “Jump In the Line“.

Brigitte Bisoux has many skills beside stripping, but one of the few she can share on stage is tap dancing. Dressed as an adorable flapper, she tapped and flirted her way through “Let’s Misbehave”.

Betty Blaize appeared in a duet with her “Special Girlfriend

Sarah Blodgett was the only performer (besides Scratch) who kept her clothes on all night*. Instead, she performed a very funny stand-up set.

Peril S. Curves closed out the first set with her stunning “Metamorphosis” act, in which she transforms from a caterpillar to a chrysalis to a butterfly with an enormous wing span.

Set 2
Ginny Nightshade was very angry with her ex and trashed all his possessions while removing her own.

Dagny Vanderlust was wrapped in layers of black bondage tape which she slowly unwound to Canvas Wonderland.

Scratch performed a mystifying card trick with the assistance of a wonderfully enthusiastic audience member.

Brigitte Bisoux got sultry to Tombstone Blues.

Beau Blush, dressed as a darling sailor promised that she “Ain’t Misbehavin'”. She had photos of her suitors tucked into her garters, which she tore up, which prompted a very clever joke from Scratch about her legs and what was between them.

Set 3
Ginny Nightshade returned as a country girl, swathed in bandanas.

Sarah Blodgett gave us another comedy set.

Peril S. Curves recruited an audience member to be a sailor to her mermaid and go “Beyond the Sea” with her. That gal has some stunning costumes.

Betty Blaize dazzled with her Wings of Isis to “Egyptian Fantasy”.

Dagny Vanderlust had a heart-themed picnic to “Heart Sized Crush“. You don’t want to know what was in her cooler!

And in the finale, Scratch announce that the winner of The Great Teaseday Cookie was Brigitte Bisoux! She’ll be back next month! I’m sure she’d want you to buy your tickets now!

*Not that she doesn’t know how to take them off. She was one of my very first students at B.A.B.E.!

And The Winner is… (part 2)

Dear Constant Reader,

The whole time I was having my little dress contest, The Teaseday Club was also having a contest. The performer who had the most tickets sold in her name would get a cookie! (And a chance to perform in next month’s show. And a $$ bonus.)

Things were very exciting near the deadline with one performer going from zero to a front runner in a matter of hours. But in the end victory — and a toffee chip cookie — went to…

Brigitte Bisoux!

She’ll be back next month trying to keep her crown as Queen of Sales (as she now gently requests we call her).

As soon as the pictures are ready, I’ll give you a recap of the show. It was a heck of a lot of fun and you should think about coming out next month.

The Teaseday Club 4/9

Dear Constant Reader,

Scratch 8The Teaseday Club is an experiment Scratch is trying out. He wanted to produce a fun monthly revue for local and visiting performers that might not otherwise have a place to perform. So, he created this cabaret with burlesque and variety acts and lovely libations at the bar in the lobby. Last night was the first show.

Sadly, I didn’t get to watch *any* of the show, as I was on last in both my sets and for the one set that I wasn’t performing, I was stage kittening. But I’ll do my best to report on the acts.

(All photos from RJP After Dark)

Set 1

Amber Rane Housewife 6Amber Rane performed her award-winning housewife act (which she developed in the Burlesque Your Way course at B.A.B.E). It was adorable when she debuted it and I bet it’s only gotten better in the past year.

Alissa Coates One Sweet Love 2Alissa Coates has a stunning voice and last night Teaseday Club members got a real treat. She accompanied herself on the guitar (the first time in front of an audience!) while singing “One Sweet Love.

Vikki Likkerish Muff'n Mix 4Vikki Likkerish performed her Muff ‘N’ Mix act. I love this number and her current version of the punchline is awesome. I remember when she won a Taste O’ Burlesque contest with it and one of the ballots had “Cup f–ing Cake” scrawled on it, just to make sure we knew who they meant.

Altar Boy Old Pair of Jeans 1Sally the Altar Boy is a poi spinner, or “object manipulator” as Scratch likes to say. We’ve always been quite impressed with his skill. All I can tell you about this act is that he used glow poi, wore a striped suit, and the music was “That Old Pair of Jeans”.

Mina Murray Minnie the Moocher 9I was up next. I had originally planned to do my boa & panels strip because it’s nice and fresh from the Mardi Gras Ball, but while I was out of town I saw that Delilah Spring was added to the line-up and I know her fan dance is to the same song. I pulled that act and chose my old favorite “Minnie The Moocher” instead (you’ll find out shortly why that was appropriate). It’s an audience favorite. And they joined in on every “hi-di hi-di hi-di-ho”.

Set 2

Stella Diamond I Hate Men 6Stella Diamond was a last minute addition when Ginny Nightshade fell ill. For her first number, she sang that classic “I Hate Men”, which she did so well in The Bod of Avon.

Amber Rane Beanbag 8Amber Rane returned to the stage and rolled around on her adorable squishy pink bean bag, to “The Beanbag Song”, of course. The punchline to this act is so cute, but I’m not going to give it away.

Alissa Coates Don't Know Why 2Alissa Coates sang “Don’t Know Why” which suits her voice fabulously.

Delilah Spring The Mooche 4Delilah Spring performed her fan dance to “The Mooche”. This is the song I was going to use, but went with Minnie instead. See, the Mooche is the dance a Moocher does. Cute, no? I’m so proud to have had Delilah as a fan dance student. This is a lovely number.

By the way, this was the easiest set ever to kitten. Only Amber needed her costume picked up, and I just had to move the microphone for both Stella and Alissa.

Set 3

Stella Diamond Hitchhiker 2Stella Diamond strips as well as sings! She hitchhiked to “Burlecue” with her trusty “Fame or Bust” suitcase by her side. (She loves that prop, although she couldn’t be more different from The Innocent in this act.)

Altar Boy La Grange 3Sally the Altar Boy spun his faster set of glow poi to “La Grange”. This picture kind of gives you an idea of what he looks like in motion.

Vikki Likkerish Painted Lady 4Vikki Likkerish performed her signature Painted Lady act. As usual, jaws were dropping all through the audience.

Delilah Spring Mississippi Mud 5Delilah Spring presented a number I hadn’t seen yet (and still haven’t since I was stuck backstage). It was to “Mississippi Mud” by The Andrews Sisters and you can see part of her river-themed costume in the photo.

Mina Murray My Room 6And lastly it was me, performing “My Room” with my black & white fans. A classic.

The Teaseday Club will be open the second Tuesday of every month. That means the next one is May 14th. I’ll probably be in the audience for that one!

Two writings in one day! I hope that satisfies your desires to hear about my goings-on for a bit. At least until tomorrow!

Brief Pause

Dear Constant Reader,

I promise I will get back to my notes about The Expo, but I just spent a glorious long weekend in sunny Florida and need to take care of a little neglected business.

But I did want to let you know that you can see me at the first meeting of The Teaseday Club tonight at The Davis Square Theatre along with Alissa Coates, Amber Rane, Delilah Spring, Sally the Altar Boy, Stella Diamond, Vikki Likkerish and Ol’ Scratch.

Also, if you’re a dancer, actor, or any kind of movement-based performer, you want to take the Body Language for Performers Workshop at B.A.B.E. on Saturday. Joe Paul Williams is an amazing instructor — he will blow your mind and open your eyes. I cannot do his fabulousness justice, so just come take the workshop. At $35 for 3 hours, it’s a bargain and you’ll leave inspired. I promise.
