A Farewell to Ya Mas

Dear Constant Reader,

Occasionally we’ve performed at Ya Mas, a Greek restaurant in a mall in New Hampshire, which was internet-famous for their over-the-top holiday decor.

We learned just the other day that, after celebrating their sixth anniversary last month, they closed. I’ll miss them. I understand why they chose to close and I’m very sorry we couldn’t have had one last meal there.

Performing there was a logistical challenge, but we made it work and had fun, while clustered behind the wine fridges in our makeshift dressing room

and trying to avoid taking out a chandelier with a large prop or headdress

and mostly succeeding…

The staff was quite nice to us and the food was fantastic! I spent some time in Greece in my grad school days and brought home a deep love of the cuisine. You’re probably not surprised that I am quite particular in what I consider worthwhile Greek food. This certainly was. One of the best parts of performing was that after we loaded out the gear, we’d have a late dinner. Everyone would swoon over the moussaka. I would say “will strip for spanakopita”.

The last time we performed there, Scratch told the kitchen “just make us what you’d serve the staff”, which turned out to be this:

I hope this gives you some idea of the restaurant’s quirky charm.
