Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday! I’m in a philosophical mood and so is your tip…

A rising tide lifts all boats.

Helping your fellow performers to succeed helps all of us. Build each other up instead of knocking down. We can all win together. Burlesque is a niche art and we need to work together to keep it growing and thriving.

Here’s one way to do that…

Lili VonSchtupp, aka Boobdini the Vagician, has created The Burlesque Deck, a deck of pin-up playing cards with 54 gorgeous photos of burlesque performers. It can also be used for magic! The deck is currently only available via Kickstarter and only until January 27th. The project needs to raise $24,000 to go forward and Kickstarter is an all or nothing deal. If The Burlesque Deck is funded, people outside the burlesque enclave will see these fabulous photos and our reach gets a little wider.

Now here’s where the helping each other out part comes in. The Great Burlesque Expo is waiving the application fee for anyone who backs The Burlesque Deck and sends them proof.

You apply to The Expo for free, The Burlesque Deck becomes a reality (and introduce more people to burlesque), and you get the warm, fuzzy feeling of having helped elevate burlesque. Everybody wins.

What else can we do to lift up the world of burlesque?

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday! Don’t forget to vote in my poll! Here’s your tip:

Spread positivity.

Let’s face it, people love to complain and share bad news. With social media it’s even easier to spread the word. People praise less publicly and that should change.

For example, when someone goes to a burlesque show and has a good time, they *might* go up to their favorite performer after the show and tell them that they enjoyed the show. And that’s usually it. However, if they didn’t like the show, they’ll jump on their favorite platform and bitch about it*. And then other people will probably pile on and the trashing will continue. It’s so much more fun to knock down than build up! This can get rather toxic very quickly. Businesses and people have been ruined by this vicious behavior.

So, let’s reverse the trend. If you like something, say something. Write a review, leave a high rating, tell people. Don’t just keep it to yourself or tell that one friend. Be public about your pleasure. When someone else posts about something they liked, share it. The world is such a negative place, let’s not add more to it.

* I’m not talking about well-thought out critique or a reasoned negative review — that’s a different topic. This is just about trash-talk.

Happy New Year!

Dear Constant Reader,

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday! It’s the first tip of 2020!

If you want to keep it, back it up.

They say nothing ever goes away on the Internet, but that doesn’t mean you can always find what you want. Web sites vanish, periodicals cease publication, social media accounts are vulnerable to censorship. If you want to keep articles, photos, videos, &c., store it where you have some control over it.

Once your data is safely in your hands, get it backed up and regularly saved. Storage is really cheap these days! Whether you use a cloud-based service or a physical hard drive is up to you. I use both, depending on the situation, set up with automatic backups, so I don’t have to remember to take care of it. If something crashes, recovery will be so much easier!

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday! I hope you’ve been having a lovely time, however you chose to celebrate this season. This is your last tip of 2019! Thank you so much for reading my humble missives this year.

Secure your bead fringe.

A lot of bead fringe is strung on a single long thread, so when you cut it to the right length, the beads fall off the end. And keep falling off…

I like to sacrifice one strand of fringe to get a piece of thread long enough to tie a knot. Tie a tight knot right up against the next bead and then dab some glue on the knot for extra security. Then I grab a needle and take a few stitches with the thread into the apron of the fringe and knot it again.

If you would like a tutorial on making your own beaded fringe (which is much more secure than commercial fringe), leave a comment here!

Your next tip will be next year! If I don’t write before then, have a wonderful New Year’s celebration!

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday! Here’s your tip!

Put your hustle on hold for a day.

As performers and artists we are constantly hustling — to get gigs, clients, students, audience, &c. It seems like if we stop, we lose. Some times I feel like a shark: swim or die.

Take a day off every once in a while and just don’t think about work. One day won’t hurt your business and it will refresh you. And that’s what I’m doing today.

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday! Happy Friday the 13th right after a full moon! Before we get to your tip, a few upcoming events…

In one week I’ll be teaching Christmas Stockings: A Holiday Burlesque Workshop.

Next Saturday The Boston BeauTease are presenting a special seasonal show at an undisclosed location! Get your tickets to the Secret (Santa) Show to learn where it is! (hint: it’s in the Boston area, there’s parking and it’s T-accessable)

And applications are open for the 13th Great Burlesque Expo!

And now your tip…

To get better sleep, don’t look at a screen before bedtime.

This time of year is stressful and hectic and performers are working a lot. It can be hard to get the sleep you need, especially when you come home keyed up from a performance. Instead of looking at your devices, do something soothing and relaxing, like taking a warm bath, writing in a journal, meditating, or doing a little gentle yoga. You’ll sleep much better!

BurlyCon 2019: Sunday

Dear Constant Reader,

And the last day of BurlyCon… I had to pack up my Giant Suitcase so I was ready to check out after my first class.

The Get Down: Floorwork Masterclass (Lou Lou la Duchess de Riere)
What a great class! Almost everything we did were new moves to me, which was very exciting. Also, I could do almost everything — a far cry from a floorwork class I once took that started with drop splits and I ended up sitting most of it out. The one thing I didn’t try was my nemesis, the shoulder roll. I really will try it some day… when I have a spotter… maybe.

After checking out and storing the Giant Suitcase, I couldn’t decide what class to take next, so I took a quick poll of the BeauTease by text and the majority said…

On Beat: Musicality 101 (Lou Lou la Duchess de Riere)
By now Lou Lou probably thinks I’m stalking her. Musicality is something I struggle with, so it was good for me. we looked at the different aspects of a piece of music and did some exercises. There’s one we should definitely try in rehearsal and one that will be good for me to play around with.

Choices! Creative Costuming & Leaving Them Gagging (Aria Delanoche)
This was another quandary. I’ve been impressed with Aria’s costuming since I met her at Stripper’s Holiday last year. However, the class was opposite Jo Weldon’s History of Leopard Print class. Hard choice! I finally decided I’d be more likely to be able to take Jo’s class in the future. Aria shared her Ten Commandments of Costuming and a list of questions to consider when designing your costume. I was particularly pleased by the section on color theory, something I often tend to be too conservative in my color pallette.

After closing ceremonies, I had hours to kill as my flight wasn’t until midnight. This was one of those times I felt pretty lonely traveling by myself. Most people I knew went out to or were performing in a local show, but I was too concerned about getting back in time for my flight. I ended up grabbing a seat by the fireplace in the lobby and working on my embroidery until it was time to head over to the airport. My flight ended up being delayed a bit, so I treated myself to a very decadent hot chocolate and brownie while I waited. Once again, there was no one in the middle seat on the place, so I even slept for much of the flight. I was so happy to get home to Albert and cuddle up with him for a nap.

Whilst writing this, I got my class evaluations. I’m so grateful for all the students who filled out the forms and gave me such great reviews!

As always, I learned a lot at BurlyCon and I’ll see you next year!

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday! Here’s your tip!

When cutting pattern pieces, keep the cutting line to the left of the scissors.
If you’re left handed and have scissors to match, keep the line on the right.

I know this seems very simple, but I’ve seen people cut the other way. It’s more awkward and the line won’t be as clean. This goes for a rotary cutter as well — keep the straight edge to the left of the cutting line and the blade to the right.

BurlyCon 2019: Saturday

Dear Constant Reader,

Saturday was BurlyLab day. BurlyLabs are hands-on classes and I think was new this year. Students registered and paid any materials fees in advance. It takes the stress off both the students (having a guaranteed spot in class) and instructors (having the right amount of materials).

Bump N Grind Burlesque Patterning (Lou Lou la Duchess de Riere)
I was very excited for this class: patterning a panel skirt, triangle bra, and panties. I’m always interested to see how someone else does it. It started well, as we were all given pattern-making supplies and Lou Lou clearly explained the math needed to create a quarter circle pattern. We got gridded pattern fabric and could draft our own. That’s when things got rocky. The class was open to all levels and so many people didn’t understand the patterning and needed individual attention. It took almost two hours to get through that one part of the garment. She rushed though the belt pattern and construction. The class was supposed to be two hours, but we had the classroom for another hour so Lou Lou quickly explained patterning and construction of triangle bras and panties. I got some useful information, even in haste.

I saw the line for buying next year’s tickets was very short, so I got on it and got the cheapest ticket they offer. I guess I’m going next year. Now to develop some new class offerings on the them “The Roaring Twenties”…

Shake It Up: Shake Dancing in History & Practice (Bebe Bardot)
I was really looking forward to this one. Bebe is a scholar, a researcher, and is probably the foremost authority on black burlesque history. She’s amazing! She came rushing in about half an hour late — her plane had been delayed and landed around the time class was supposed to start! She hit the ground running and taught a shorter version of the class, but it was still packed with information. We learned about the history of shake dancing, a hidden part of burlesque history, and then we got to try it out! It’s so high energy and exciting. But I can’t imagine doing it for hours, like the shake dancers of the past. You can read Bebe’s brief history of shake dancing here.

Tantalizing Tulle Boas (Robyn Swing)
Before I go to BurlyCon I ask the troupe if there are any classes they’d like me to take and report back. Ava was particularly interested in this topic, so I signed up for it. It was terrific to be able to try the technique hands-on. After a few fumbles, I walked out of the class feeling like I had the technique down and I had something concrete to show the troupe. You can see my very first puff in the photo. Only a thousand more to make a boa!

Again I skipped the evenings activities to meet up with my friend A. I’ve known her since I was in grad school and try to get together with her whenever I can. She suggested we go see Dracula at a local theatre and I was all over that, as you might imagine. It was a terrific production. Very creative staging and movement, an interesting take on the story, great use of music, very effective puppetry. I’m very glad we went.

More to come…
