Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday! A few commercial plugs before we get to your tip…

1. This coming Thursday there’s a fund raiser for The Thalia. It’s going to be great time with music, an auction, and a dessert bar. Get your ticket here. If you can make it, please consider donating to the Kickstarter campaign. Please support The Thalia — we desperately need more performance venues in the Boston area!

2. Applications to The Great Burlesque Exposition of 2017 (#BurlExpo) open August 1st! For the first week, they’re completely free!

3. The Boston BeauTease are taking over The Teaseday Club! If you’ve missed seeing us (and we’ve missed performing for you), come to The Davis Square Theatre on August 2! Tickets available here.

4. I’m teaching THREE costuming workshops in August! Learn to make pasties, a shimmy belt, or a g-string. Come in with nothing, leave with a beautiful costume piece that you made yourself! I’ll probably show some burlesque movies while we stitch. Register here.

And now for your tip…

Unplug.

I know many of us are always hustling — looking for gigs, promoting, communicating with clients, &c. — and our computer and mobile devices are a lifeline. But they are also an anchor. Take some time to get away from that tether. I like to take a walk every day sans phone and let my mind wander. It helps so much with relaxation and creativity.

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday! Here’s your tip.

Stop a stocking run with soap.

Everyone knows you can use clear nail polish to keep a run in your stocking from getting worse (you knew that, right?), but you can also use soap.

It’s so much more convenient when you’re out and about. I don’t have room in my tiny evening clutch to carry a bottle of nail polish just in case, but there’s always a ladies’ room around. Just dab some liquid soap around the run or rub it with a moistened bar of soap — those bitty hotel bars are the perfect size. Let the soap dry and continue on your merry way! It’s not as permanent a fix as nail polish, but it can save your evening.

I’ve also heard you can use hair spray, but I’ve never tested it.

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday! Here’s your tip!

Safety goggles are for the sewing room as well as the workshop.

Having a broken machine needle fly in your face is an experience most sewers don’t soon forget! When sewing particularly tough materials (canvas, leather) or ones with hard little bits (sequined or beaded fabrics) or sewing through lots of layers or near metal bits — any time you’re likely to break a needle — wear safety goggles. They may not be chic, but they are sexier than an eyepatch!

Friday Tip!

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday! Sometime very soon I’ll tell you all about my trip to Chicago (spoiler: it was fantastic), but for now I’ll just give you your tip!

Wear kneepads when practicing floorwork.

It is so much easier to effectively learn and drill floorwork when your knees aren’t bruised and aching. Since I started using kneepads, I can practice longer and get more out of a rehearsal session and really refine my technique. I got these great looking zebra-striped ones. You’ll want to stop using kneepads when you are actually running your number as you would on stage, so you get used to the feel in bare knees.

Of course, there’s a exception to every tip…

In “The Duel” which was part of R&J: A Shakespearean Burlesque, I have to drop to my knees to crawl between some legs and then again to duck a punch while simultaneously ripping off Betty’s breeches. I was wearing kneepads in rehearsal, since I was crashing to my knees over and over again as we developed and rehearsed the choreography (and we were rehearsing twice as much because Devora was performing at The Expo and Brigitte took over the role in R & J). Scratch decided that I should just keep wearing them, just in case, and it’s a pretty silly number, so that just adds to the ridiculousness. D.D. is wearing her own pair, since she also hits the deck in the act.

Friday Tip!

Dear Constant Reader,

As your read this, I’m on my way to the Windy City Burlesque Festival where I’ll be teaching 3 costuming classes on Saturday. If you want to learn all about corsetry, costume care, or closures, I’m your gal. I hope to see you there!

Here’s a little tidbit from one of my classes:

If you’re going invest in a corset, make sure it fits you!

A properly fitted corset should be comfortable and supportive. It should feel like you’re being hugged, not squeezed. You should be able to walk and breathe normally. The lacing should be secure, but not digging into your back and you should be able to leave a gap of a couple of inches. Bones shouldn’t poke you at all. Take the time to have a fitting before buying. If you’re making your own, do a mock-up first, bones and all. You’ll look and feel fabulous!

Friday Tip!

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday! Here’s your tip!

Use cosmetic-quality glitter on your face.

Sure, you could pick up glitter at the craft store for way cheaper. But what’s it made of? You don’t want glitter of unknown origin near your eyes or, especially, on your lips. No matter how careful you are, you’re probably going to ingest some flakes over the course of a show. Make sure your glitter is non-toxic and made to be on your skin.

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday! Here’s your tip!

Podcasts are worth a listen.

Previously I advised you to watch burlesque (live and on the screen) and read about burlesque. Now consider listening. I tend to listen to podcasts when I’m cooking, especially things that keep me chained to the stove. I cannot tell you how many podcasts I go through during sour cherry season…

Currently I’m enjoying Lunch with Legs and Michelle L’amour’s Revealing. Listening to people talk about their passions is such a delight.

It’s not burlesque related, but Red, our frequent box office gal, is part of the trio that creates Anglofilles: Girls Gone Geek. If you like pop culture and feminism and politics and totally random stuff, check it out.

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday! And best of luck to everyone performing at the Burlesque Hall of Fame this weekend!

Here’s your tip!

Clean your false lashes.

It’s better for them and for your eyes to give them the occasional cleansing. It’s easy and you only need a couple of items, which you already have (or should).

1. Take off your lashes.
I know that sounds dumb, but falling asleep while still wearing lashes is not unheard of… When removing them, grab the edge of the band, not the lashes themselves!

2. Peel off excess adhesive.
A little old glue can help the lashes stick better, but you don’t want a thick layer. Some recommend using tweezers, but I just use my fingernails to peel it off. Remember to hold the band, not the lashes when you pull off the glue residue. I’ve found latex-based glue comes off more easily than the non-rubbery stuff I use these days.

3. Put the lashes back on their plastic thingy.
It will help them keep their shape during cleaning.

4. Dampen a cotton swab with a gentle eye makeup remover and gently brush it over the lashes from band to tip to take off the accumulated gunk.
I like this remover from Atomic Cosmetics (of course).

5. Dampen a second swab with a little water and repeat the process to rinse the lashes.

6. Let them air dry on the plastic form.

That’s it! You don’t need to do this every time you wear your lashes, but occasional cleaning will keep your lashes looking good longer. And it’s got to be healthier for your eyes!

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday (and long weekend for many)! Here’s another travel tip:

When traveling, bring your own makeup towel. The hotel/your hosts will thank you.

I bought a bunch of inexpensive and cheerfully-colored washcloths at Ikea and it’s no trouble to toss a couple into my suitcase.

Hat tip to those who reminded me of this tip: Iva Handfull, the staff at BurlyCon, and Rae Bradbury-Enslin, who hosts dozens of haunt actors every October and is tired of having her guest towels ruined.

Spring SPECTACULAR Showcase 5/21/16

Dear Constant Reader,

This weekend was the spring B.A.B.E. student showcase. We ended up calling it “Spectacular” instead of “Student” because we had a couple of instructors on stage too. We hold these recitals twice a year so our Burlesque Your Way students can show off their new creations, but also to give our alumnae a performance opportunity.

Scratch hosted the first part of the show — distinguish alums and instructors.

First up was Sadie Hunter, bringing back her first Burlesque Your Way creation, a fierce chair dance to Beyoncé’s version of “Fever”.

Kitty Levesque brought a touch of glamour with her Marilyn-style “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend”.

Elsa Riot reprised the fire-themed act she had debuted at The Teaseday Club. And despite her fears, her merkin stayed on again!

I was sorry I couldn’t see Alice Azul‘s new number since I was fussing backstage. The bit I saw in rehearsal looked super-sultry and she had a lovely feather-trimmed robe (that she made herself).

Lucie Luxe, our alumna-turned-instructor has been away from the stage earning another Master’s degree. Her return was heralded by a re-work of one of her Teaseday Club favorites, to “Toxic” from Melanie Martinez.

Devora Darling demonstrated her boundless energy and dance skills to The Puppini Sister’s “It Don’t Mean a Thing”. It was a great advertisement for her class next month where she’ll teach a complete burlesque routine of her own creation.

Mina Murray: That’s me! I presented my revamped version of The Faerie Queene. This is the third iteration, and I hope it’s finally the one! The evolution deserves a post of its very own.

The second half, which I hosted, was devoted Burlesque Your Way students.

This is Honey Bee‘s third creation with a B.A.B.E. program (she took Burlesque Your Way once before and the Mystery Box class). She stripped out of a peacock-feathered costume to Amy Winehouse’s “Love is Blind” and ended by pulling off a scarf that was draped atop her corset and wrapping it around her eyes like a blindfold in her final pose.

Lucky Penny presented her very first burlesque routine! She was a jewel thief who distracted a hapless guard by taking off her clothes. Her friend playing the guard really hammed it up and made a great foil to her naughtiness. The song was, appropriately, “Wikked Lil’ Grrrls” by Esthero.

Pearl Buttons has been working really hard! She created two numbers for her debut at The Teaseday Club plus her class assignment. This was a high-energy dance-intensive striptease to Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s “The Boogie Bumper”.

Devastasia, who made her debut last fall in the Mystery Box class, went classic with Frank Sinatra singing “Mack the Knife”. She played it up as a hit-woman who removes concealed weapons as well as her clothes and packed them all neatly into a suitcase. Then she put on a totally different outfit and got out of town.

We closed the show with Jeannie Martini, also a Mystery Box veteran. She brought down the house with her fan dance to Doris Day’s “I Only Have Eyes for You.” I don’t want to give away the punchline, but it was hilarious and clever!

And here’s almost everyone! From L to R: Lucky Penny, Mina Murray, Lolita the Stage Kitten, Pearl Buttons, Devora Darling, Devastasia, Jeannie Martini, Kitty Levesque, Alice Azul, Sadie Hunter, and Elsa Riot. (missing: Honey Bee, Lucie Luxe and Scratch). Photo courtesy of Elsa Riot.

Big thanks to Allison in the tech booth and Lolita the Stage Kitten! And of course, Scratch who produced the show and handled the box office, as well as hosting.

B.A.B.E. students will be back in the Fall for the next showcase!
