Wings!

Betty Blaize with Wings of Isis

On Saturday Betty and I went to a master bellydance seminar on Wings of Isis with Ayshe. Betty has danced with wings before, most notably in the 2010 edition of The Wrathskellar, but it was all new to me. Well, it’s not like I’m unfamiliar with manipulating large, floaty objects…

In the first workshop we spent a lot of time on an anatomy lesson, discussion of the proper position of the spine and use of the muscles in the back & shoulders. Positioning the arms is very important in using the wings. We also spent a lot of time on expansion and contraction of the body. I know everyone was itching to get the wings on, but this groundwork was necessary.

In the second workshop we learned a short choreography. Betty might have actually learned it — I was just doing the best I could at the moment. I’d been a little nervous about how long it had been since I practiced bellydance, but Ayshe is more a fusion dancer than a traditionalist and most of her movements were strongly ballet and modern dance influenced.

After the workshops, there was a student showcase where Betty and I both performed — but not bellydance, either traditional or fusion. She presented a tilyana (I’ve probably spelled that wrong), a classical Indian dance piece her teacher originally learned in 20 minutes. Betty’s been working on it for 6 months, but don’t think the less of her — her teacher is Superdancer. It’s all about very precise footwork and hand gestures, with a touch of the expressive storytelling that enlivens all of Betty’s dancing.

Betty encouraged me to show a fan dance, but I was in a quandary about the costume. I don’t usually wear one (well, pasties & a g-string) and this was *not* a burlesque audience. I ended up in my “Blue Angel” middle layer — bra & panties with silk panels for a skirt. It looked really nice with the white fans.

We had a long discussion on the ride back about teaching and choreography. A day well spent!

And I did get my own set of wings…

I’m very excited to share this treat with you. This potentially NSFW treat…

I’m dancing on the back of the banquettes in the VIP area at Oberon. Orignially I was a little concerned about having mirrors behind me, but I think it enhances the performance. I’m very happy with the fans, which were custom made just for this act.

Warming Up Again

Dear Constant Reader,

Vote for the Boston Babydolls!

About a month ago I wrote about an exercise we use for warm ups. Usually Betty runs warm ups for us but we all decided to give her a little break and the Babydolls have been taking turns leading warm ups.

So, far we’ve had burlesque/ballet combinations from Devora Darling, calisthenics and balance exercises from Evie Sphinx, and last night, an introductory tap lesson from Brigitte Bisoux. It’s been so much fun trying different things! Not to mention hurting different body parts. Betty usually kills us with shimmies, but Evie tortured us with squats.

Eventually it’s going to be my turn, so I had best figure out what I’m going to do.

Happy Mardi Gras

Dear Constant Reader,

Vote for the Boston Babydolls!

It’s Mardi Gras, or Carnival, or Shrove Tuesday, as you like. Enjoy the last day before those 40 days of penitence and abstenance until… The Great Burlesque Expo! (or Easter, if you’re like that)

You may be wondering how the Boston Babydolls celebrate Mardi Gras. Or not, but I’m going to tell you anyway.

On Saturday, we performed at the 19th Annual Mardi Gras Ball, hosted by Shaun Wolf Wortis. We love this event. It’s such a treat getting to perform to live jazz & blues in front of hundreds of screaming revelers.

Evie starting things off with a smokin’ striptease to “Purple Wail”. On stage Evie is often sweet, goofy, adorable, or mysterious, but that night she was sexy as all get out.

She was followed by Betty Blaize showing off her bellydance skills to “Caravan”. As sometimes happens with a live band, things got a little interesting, but Betty is a great improvisation dancer and I don’t think the audience had any idea things had not gone completely according to plan.

Brigitte reprised her tap dance from Unlucky in Love to “Let’s Misbehave”, as sung by Alissa Coates. I’m afraid the people in the back of the club were unable to see her fancy footwork, but someone put a microphone down on the stage, so the tapping could be heard.

I closed out the set with a fan dance to “Harlem Nocturne”, one of my favorites. As always, the drummer is the happiest guy in the band, since he sees what is concealed from the rest of you.

The next morning (not too early) we had a cast party for Unlucky in Love, continuing the Mardi Gras theme. Scratch made big batches of jambalaya and red beans & rice and Devora brought homemade pralines. I made beignet dough (I will admit, it was Cafe du Monde mix, but only because I’ve been sick lately & tire easily and Scratch wouldn’t hear of me putting in the extra work to make them from, well, scratch). Then Bobby the Fry Guy cooked up the beignets to crispy perfection with the Fry Gal on powdered sugar duty. And of course a soundtrack of jazz to accompany it all.

Because I am a traditionalist, I believe there will be pancakes tonight.

And how do you celebrate the day?

The talented Chris McIntosh photographed Unlucky in Love last Friday and despite the challenges of taking pictures during a show, they came out great! Take a look here. He also took some portraits and perhaps I’ll share those too.

Unlucky in Love: Introduction

Dear Constant Reader,

Please vote for the Boston Babydolls!

Unlucky in Love is the story of The Writer (Scratch) who is trying to write a guide to romance. Unfortunately what he doesn’t know about women could fill a book. Everytime he comes up with a good idea, a dancer or singer illustrates it and frequently proves him wrong!

This show was challenging for us in several ways. First and foremost, we were working with live music. Having a band and singers was an amazing experience, but logistically interesting.

The theatre is a little quirky. The stage is small and, even with extensions that Scratch built, was mostly taken up by musicians, singers, and The Writer, so the dancers were predomintly on the floor, performing in three-quarter round. Trying to make sure everyone in the audience got a good view was not easy.

Another thing about the theatre is that there is almost no backstage. We kept the set pieces to a minimum, but we still needed a chaise, a desk, a table and chair moving on and off. The backstage ballet of shifting them around while hitting cues and not blocking the entrances was nothing short of amazing. Our stage crew, especially our Stage Manager, really went above and beyond to keep everything running smoothly.

Perhaps tomorrow I’ll start writing about the acts in specific.

Goodbye to Unlucky in Love

Dear Constant Reader,

Please vote for the Boston Babydolls!

Unlucky in Love closed last night with a sold-out show. It was our most ambitious and challenging show to date and in many ways our most successful. I think we were all sorry to see it end.

I might write a bit about the different acts in the days to come and give you a bit of a back-stage look.

But there’s no rest for us yet. Today the theatre has to be struck and all the costumes, props, set pieces, and lights stored away (and some new items built on site, like Evie’s super-spy desk, need to find a home). Saturday you can find us at the Mardi Gras Ball, doing a little striptease to some fabulous jazz.

Welcome!

Dear Constant Reader,

Please vote for the Boston Babydolls!

It’s not easy to become a Boston Babydoll. We’ve very picky about who becomes a troupe member (as opposed to being cast in a show). Last night we made an offer to a performer in Unlucky in Love and she accepted.

I’m so please to welcome Elise (stage name coming soon) into the troupe. If you saw her as The Innocent in The Wrathskeller or performing as a singer and dancer in Unlucky in Love, you’ll you know why we’re so happy to have this multi-talented lady aboard.

And if you haven’t seen her, you’ve got just a few more chances. Tickets for tonight’s show are practically sold out, but there are still some available for Sunday, Monday, and Valentine’s Day…if you hurry.

Snippets from the Weekend

Dear Constant Reader,

Please click and nominate the Boston Babydolls for “Best Burlesque” and Naked Girls Reading for “Best Literary Gang”. Thank you!

A few impressions from Unlucky in Love this weekend:

* Devora eating her dinner while in a full split

* turning people away from a sold-out house

* Evie’s bum-shaking victory dance when the Giants won the Super Bowl (sorry, local folks, she’s from Jersey)

* the vintage-clad ladies of Artifaktori classing up the audience

* Brigitte’s sorority sisters screaming whenever she came on stage

* Scratch gently disentangling himself from a tipsy fan professing her undying love for him

* long-time fans congratulating Betty on her svelte figure

* so much glitter on the floor

* hobo stew, homemade fudge, boiled peanuts

We’re dark until Friday and then we only have 5 more performances. Sold-out houses are likely, so get your tickets sooner rather than later.

We’ve completed out first weekend of Unlucky in Love with near sell-out crowds on Friday and Saturday. If you’re thinking of coming, get your tickets now. Even the off nights (Thursday, Sunday, and Monday) are filling up.

When you come to the show, consider going to Foundry (above us) or Saloon (next door). They’ve been really great to us and the food & drinks are just right for pre-show/post-show.
