Helping Hamilton

Dear Constant Reader,

Chef HamiltonThis is Hamilton A. Cat. He’s a character in Robert Lay’s books (the Giblet & Belle and Holmes & Watson series), but he’s also a real cat. Hamilton is very sick and his vets don’t have a diagnosis yet. In fact, his family was prepared to say goodbye. However, Hamilton is a fighter. He’s not giving up! Currently, he’s at home with his family with a feeding tube while the vets figure out what’s wrong.

If you have pets, you know that veterinary care is very expensive. After a lot of nudging from his friends, Robert agreed to create a GoFundMe, which you can find here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-for-hamilton-a-cat

You can also support Hamilton by buying Robert’s books. The holidays are right around the corner and surely you know someone who would love a good mystery featuring cats:

Giblet & Belle –
The Case Of The Missing Ring
The Case Of The One Still Too Many
The Case Of The Vendetta

Holmes & Watson –
The Case Of The Diabolical Daughter
The Case Of The One Bridge Too Far

As Georgia Dunn put it so eloquently in Breaking Cat News:Let's save a cat

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday! And even more so, happy Friday the 13th! We’re celebrating with our Bad Luck Burlesque show at Deagon Giles Speakeasy Lounge in Salem. What could go wrong?

Here’ s a thematic tip:

Black cats make great pets.

You know how fond I am of cats. And I’m very fond of black cats. My first cat, Selene, was all black and, of course, now we have Bartholomew. He’s so affectionate and clever and great at camouflage. There’s many a time I’ve gone to pet him in the dark only to encounter a pillow and then see a pool of shadow open its eyes and begin purring.

Bartholomew on the window perch

However, there is still some weird prejudice against black cats and they are adopted much less than cats of other colors. Personally, I don’t understand it, but it’s a real problem.

Devastasia recently adopted her own black cat from Black Cat Rescue! They’re a great organization here in Boston specializing in these hard-to-place cats. Consider adopting from them or supporting them with a donation.

Albert Day

Dear Constant Reader,

Thirteen years ago today Albert A. Cat found us and transformed our lives. At the time, we though he was a lost cat, but he knew where his home was right away.

This is the third Albert Day without our handsome boy. I miss him every day.Albert

If you wish to honor our distinguished gentleman, be kind today. Tell the people and creatures you love that you do. Take a nap with a friend. Donate to a cat rescue or shelter or MSPCA Angell Hospital. Treat yourself to a traditional Albert cake (small almond cakes with white frosting, topped with shredded coconut, a little chocolate, and a pinch of sea salt).

But mostly, be kind.

Albert Day

Dear Constant Reader,

Twelve years ago today a huge, somewhat scruffy white cat with a rakish scar across his nose walked into our life and changed it forever.

The Cat

Albert A. Cat touched many people in his time with us, some of whom never even met him.

This is the second Albert Day without our handsome boy. I miss him every day.

If you wish to honor our distinguished gentleman, be kind today. Tell the people and creatures you love that you do. Enjoy your food. Take a nap with a friend. Donate to a cat rescue or shelter or MSPCA Angell Hospital. Treat yourself to the traditional Albert cakes (vanilla cupcakes with vanilla frosting and shredded coconut on top).

But mostly, be kind.

Introducing Jonathan

Dear Constant Reader,

We’ve always been a one-cat household. And assumed we would stay that way. However, Bartholomew had other plans. He’s so smart and gets bored so easily. And when he gets bored he gets destructive. In the mornings he would break into the bedroom (and it took over a year to figure out how to install doors that he couldn’t crack) pre-dawn and start knocking things down. Or he would just sit outside the door and howl like the world was coming to an end.

When one of the sleepy humans would get up we would see that he had brought us one of his favorite toys, like a cat dancer or his mouse on a string. Something he wanted a person on the other end of.

We started talking about getting him a companion and went back and forth about it a lot. We weren’t sure if bringing another cat into the house was a good idea or not. What if they hated each other? What if Bart was miserable?

Scratch found a cat in a foster situation in Florida that the rescue organization would transport to Boston.  In October we had a video interview with the cat and his foster family and a virtual home visit by the rescue. All that was left was for us to decide yes or no.

As you might have guessed, dear Reader, we said yes.

Now came the challenge of getting NewerCat (we would wait until he told us his name) to Boston. We were having some major work done on the house at the end of October and then I was going to Stripper’s Holiday in early November, so we wanted him to arrive after that. There was a transport coming up at the right time, but we didn’t want to further stress the little guy with being in a vehicle for over 24 hours. So we had to wait for one of the “Flight Angels” (off-duty flight attendants) to volunteer to escort him. In the mean time, he moved from his original foster home to a different one, and then to a third.

At last, we headed to Logan Airport to meet our Angel, Lisa, and collect NewerCat, who had been a great traveler and was calm for the whole car ride home.

Bartholomew was predictably not thrilled at the tiny interloper (a perfectly normal-sized cat, but next to our massive panther, he’s a wee peanut), but after only three days of controlled visits and some hissing, they achieved détente and after a couple more days, started hanging out together.

Allow me to present Jonathan A. Cat!

Untitled Untitled
Untitled Untitled

We call him Jackie-Boy. He’s a two-or-three-year-old Turkish Van mix and is very playful and affectionate. The belly is not a trap, but he does like to chew on fingers. He and Bart wrestle together and groom each other and birdwatch from the same window.

It’s kind of strange having a white cat again, especially when he sleeps in Albert’s bed (taking up a fraction of the space), but nice.

The Universe Gives and Takes

Dear Constant Reader,

I don’t want to write this, but I also need to.

One of the things that made the pandemic bearable was The Boys, Tux and Tom, the bonded feral cats who made our yard home. It brought me a lot of joy to see them. Especially when they snuggled together to nap and happily rolled around in the grass. When Tom was killed by a coyote that joy went away and so did Tux. We were pretty sure we weren’t going to see Tux in our yard again.

Tux did come back and eventually he made a new friend, Lord Julius, who reigned over the Rectory behind us. Julius is a cranky sort and will hiss and smack your hand if you get too close, but somehow Tux won him over. He convinced Julius to hang out in our yard and stay in our shelter. We started calling them The Gentlemen.

At first the friendship seemed grudging on Julius’s part. They often sat at opposite corners of the hot tub (their favorite perch). Eventually, they became closer until they groomed each other and snuggled up together to nap. It made me so happy to see them together.

Tux was also becoming less skittish around me. In the mornings he would be waiting for his breakfast. He would lead me to the feeding station but hang back from the food until I walked away. Lately, if I stood quietly by the food dish, he would overcome his hesitation and eat. I never tried to pet him. Maybe someday we’d reach that level of trust.

Cats are a gift from the Universe.

On July 21st I saw on our outdoor camera that there had been a coyote in the backyard around 4am. I raced to the window, hoping to see both Gentlemen and calm my fears. Julius came for breakfast, but no Tux. I held out hope for a while, but I knew. Our neighbors found him and we buried him in the Rectory garden, near his best friend Tom. Scratch made a memorial of two stones, a big one and a small one, nestled up against one another.

Julius mostly stays close to the Rectory now. I worry about him every day.

Introducing Bartholomew

Dear Constant Reader,

I’d like to introduce you to the newest denizen of The Manor

IMG_6446

Bartholomew A. Cat.

The A. is for Allen. He runs very fast.

He’s been in residence for just over a month and while we miss Albert more than I can say, little Bart brings some joy into the house.

He’s younger than we planned to adopt, not yet a year, and quite the intrepid explorer, looking for all the dustiest corners of The Manor and finding as many cobwebs as he can and he’s already figured out how to open some of the pantry cabinets. From his large ears and long legs and even longer tail we think he’s going to be a big boy. Probably not as massive as Albert, but he’s already a substantial cat.

It’s been a challenging transition from life with our dignified gentleman to this little bundle of energy and chaos. He wants very much to be in the same place as the people, although he doesn’t snuggle much (yet), and loves playing with toys, looking out the window, and being carried. He purrs constantly and loudly. We couldn’t have asked for a sweeter cat.

There’s a good chance you’ll be seeing him in more of my videos (if you’re a Patron or subscribe to my YouTube channel or 365 Kitchen Cabinet) or hearing some mysterious noise off-camera followed by someone yelling “Bart!”

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday! Before we get to your tip, I just want to mention that Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. One of my Little Books would be a wonderful gift for the burlesque lover in your life. Also, The Boston BeauTease are presenting Valent-Tease Day at Thunder Road that night. Not only will we be presenting our usual burlesque delights, but some of my students from B.A.B.E. will be making their burlesque debut. AND you’ll get to see the act I debuted in Los Angeles. Right now the only way to see it is to support me on Patreon.

With no further ado or commercials, here’s your tip!

If you have pets with fur, keep a lint brush in your show bag.

No matter how carefully you keep you costumes away from your fuzzy family members, somehow fur is still going to make an appearance — and of course it will contrast as highly as possible. Albert just loves to cuddle up to dark clothing…

Scratch points out that if you’ve forgotten your lint brush, there’s still hope, “you’re a burlesque dancer — you’ve got double-sided tape!”.

M2Like this tip? There are lots more in Miss Mina Murray’s Little Book of Better Burlesque.

A Brief Feline Interlude

Dear Constant Reader,

I promise I will get back to the burlesque soon, after all, I still need to tell you about my travels to Winnipeg. However, I didn’t want to leave you hanging after my missive of Friday.

Thursday night I was awakened by Scratch yelling that something was wrong with Albert. He was behaving very strangely and clearly having trouble breathing. We raced off to the animal hospital. It was a terrifying trip, dear reader. After some oxygen and some tests, the vet diagnosed a possible asthma attack, gave us some recommendations, and we took him home at about 2:30 in the morning.

At about 7 in the morning Scratch yelled again — Albert was having a seizure. Then he had the same strange behavior (although thankfully not the breathing issue) of the night before. And then he was perfectly normal. Back to the hospital we went.

We realized he had probably had a seizure the night before, but we had only seen the aftermath. He was admitted to the hospital for observation and to have a battery of tests. His People were pretty well wrecked at this point and went home to fret. We did visit him in the evening and he was happy to see his Man, if a little dopey from the anti-seizure medication.

All his tests came back clear and we brought him home Saturday afternoon with a diagnosis of epilepsy of unknown cause. He’s very unsteady on his feet and he’s having a hard time climbing up and down from the day bed (his favorite spot and usually an easy jump), even with the trundle bed out to make a step. He’s uninterested in much of anything except sleep and food, although he enjoys being petted. Even his favorite toy holds no attraction. We’re told it will take him a couple of weeks to adjust to the medication. Also, his fur was shaved in a couple of places, including the top of his head, so he’s not his usual handsome self.

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Angell Animal Medical Center. Everyone we dealt with was terrific. The fact that Albert was able to see a neurologist was incredible. If you need medical care for your pet, I can’t recommend them highly enough.

The outpouring of love and support from all over the internet has been amazing and we appreciate all your kind words. It really kept us going, knowing how many of you were sending us well wishes and healing thoughts.

And here he is, not the best picture, but he’s not at his best right now.

Friday Tip

Dearest Constant Reader,

I had a nice Friday Tip all planned for you and then everything went to hell. Albert, Scratch’s beloved cat, had a scary medical incident last night that had us at the animal hospital until the wee hours and then this morning it happened again, so he’s back in the hospital. I’m kind of a wreck, so I’m just going to say

Be good to one another.
