An Exhausting Weekend

Dear Constant Reader,

It has taken me this long to report on my weekend as I was completely wiped out! It was a great weekend, but a strenuous one.

Friday night The Boston BeauTease were engaged to perform at Rufflecon. I knew it was an “alternative fashion” event, but that did not prepare me for the acres of ruffles, lace, and petticoats worn by the attendees. It was predominantly Lolita fashions with a smattering of goth, steampunk, and Victoriana styles. I wish I had taken pictures to share with you the remarkable confections I saw walking around. To the right is a random photo from their fashion show, just to give a small idea.

We had been asked for a show that was a little Halloween-ish, for elaborate costumes, and for a male stripteaser. So, we brought along a couple of numbers from The Wrathskellar (preview tomorrow!), some of our finest costumes, and the performer who plays Klaus in The Wrathskellar, under the nom de strip of “Charles River”.

The audience was marvelous! We had a wonderful time performing for them. In particular, they went completely berserk over “Charles”. To no one’s surprise they loved Devora’s “Creepy Doll”. It was a perfect choice for this ruffle & doll-loving crowd. Betty & I got a lot of appreciation for our costumes (made by her, by me, and by Catherine D’Lish). You can see Betty’s new Theda Bara-inspired costume at The Wrathskellar. It’s quite remarkable.

It was a midnight show, so morning came very early. After a delightful breakfast, we took a turn through the vendors’ room, where I felt rather underdressed with only my single modest crinoline. I might have acquired a new tea wallet…

As much as we might have liked to stay in the fantasyland of ruffles and frills, we had to head back to Boston to get ready for load-in for The Wrathskellar first thing Sunday morning.

My day started with a private fan dance lesson with Elsa Riot at B.A.B.E. and then Eva (aka Blanche) arrived to help me pack up all the costumes & props and load up the car.

So much work had to be done, like building and painting stage platforms, hanging lights, making new curtains &c. It was all hands on deck and all the cast & crew pitched in. I’m not entirely certain what all was going on in the theatre as I had my own little project.

The tech closet had to be magically transformed into The Diva’s dressing room. I opened the door and my heart sank. It was full of boxes, lighting and sound gear, and all sorts of junk. I metaphorically rolled up my sleeves and got to work. I only thought to take a picture *after* I moved the boxes of our lighting gear out, cleared a shelf, and removed some of the 50 or so microphone stands.

You aren’t going to believe the transformation. That is, if you’re one of the lucky guests invite into my dressing room for a chat…

And after all that hard physical labor, we still had to have rehearsal. Well, that’s why they call it “hell week”. Ah, well, as they say, I can sleep when I’m dead.

I hope to see you in the audience. It makes all the work worthwhile.

October Approaches

Dear Constant Reader,

It’s almost October and there is so much going on! I’m in such a tizzy because there are so many fabulous events that I’m involved with or will be attending.

First up is The Boston BeauTease (that’s us with our shiny new name) appearing at RuffleCon, an alternative fashion conference, on Friday, October 2nd. You know how much I *love* costumes and we’re bringing out some of our most elaborate ones for this show. I’m so excited to be presenting a new act with my hand-me-down Catherine D’Lish costume. Although I’ve performed in it before:
I’ve never felt like it really had its own number. Now it does. No spoilers here; you’ll just have to come to RuffleCon or wait patiently until I bring it to Boston.

Next is The Teaseday Club. I won’t be performing, but B.A.B.E. alumna Elsa Riot will! And Morning Glory will be defending her Cookie Queen title for the second month!

And then comes the event we’ve all been waiting for… The Wrathskellar returns! We’ve been thwarted in our attempts to present our long-form Halloween show for two years now. I cannot express how happy I am that our beloved decrepit cabaret is opening again. I cannot wait to become The Diva and luxuriate in the star’s dressing room again. One (un)lucky person gets to join me there each night for an intimate moment…

It’s the same story of ambition, jealousy, and murder, with the best acts of the previous four years, plus some brand-new ones and a few surprises. I just know this is going to be the best year yet!

Want a sneak preview? I’ve got a few pictures from rehearsals on Facebook, but trust me, you want to see the real thing.

As if he wasn’t busy enough with The Wrathskellar, Scratch is also directing The Woman in Black: A Ghost Play.
We saw this play in London a few years ago and were completely blown away. It’s truly scary and is one of my favorite pieces of theatre (ignore the movie — it’s not as clever or as frightening). I can’t wait to see it brought to the stage here! It’s at the Davis Square Theatre at the beginning of the week, while The Wrathskellar is on the weekends.

Lastly, but only when the calendar is concerned, is Striptober! on Monday, October 19th. It’s B.A.B.E.‘s semi-annual student showcase and this one is going to be particularly great! We’ve got senior students like Alice Azul and Sadie Hunter strutting their stuff, but also the students of Scratch’s Mystery Box class. They each received a box of items from which they had to create a brand-new routine. Here’s they are immediately after opening their boxes:
I am dying to see what they created! It’s been kept a total mystery!

Will I see you this October?

We Shall Return

Dear Constant Reader,

I just got some exciting news from Scratch. We have the Davis Square Theatre booked for the month of October. That means…

The Wrathskellar will reopen!

It’s been two years since I last set foot in that decrepit cabaret. Two years since The Diva preened, The Countess plotted, The Martinette abused the wenches, The Broad lusted, The Innocent lost her way, and the Lost Girl lost everything. And Bücher held sway over all.

But we have a lot going on before we can return to that shadowy venue…

More Costuming

Dear Constant Reader,

I spent part of yesterday turning this:

into another costume piece for The Wrathskellar.

The result was thus:

Ta da! My hooping outfit. It will look much better in action. My Little Friend is good for most fitting work, but she’s not great for display. For one thing, her boobs don’t push up like the bra wants them to. And, at the moment, everything is just pinned to her. I’ll actually need some snaps & hooks, since I’m not so keen on straight pins in my flesh.

I’m going to have to take a hiatus from the Fit & Flair project, which is a shame because it is so close to finished. At the left, you can see the neck facing sewn on, but not yet turned to the inside and tacked down. That’s since been done. And the sleeves are hemmed (by hand, of course). Technically all that’s left to do is hem the skirt. The dress wants to hang for a little before measuring the hem, but given my schedule, I think it’s going to hang for a good long while before I get to it.

But that wouldn’t make a very finished outfit. I want to make a wide belt. I have the fabric, but I haven’t found a buckle I like yet. Also, I think it really wants a crinoline.

Here’s the dress in its almost finished state.

I think it will be staying this way until at least October…

Costuming The Wrathskellar

Dear Constant Reader,

Work on The Wrathskellar is in full swing. Yes, we’re actually calling it The W. R. Athskellar Cavalcade of Curiosities this year, but The Wrathskellar is so much faster to write.

The main thing we Babydolls are concentrating on right now are our choreographies and that means we need to know what our costumes are. Part of rehearsal last night was spent rummaging through our costume collection to choose pieces and figure out what needs to be created. One of the challenges for this show is that it’s entirely in greyscale. All costumes have to be black, white, shades of grey, or silver.

We’ve got a few pictures up in this Facebook album: W. R. Ehearsal, Aug 25. We’re planning to be better about documenting some of our rehearsal/backstage process.

I’m making both of my costumes. This weekend was spent buying most of the fabric and starting construction. This is going to be the top for my hooping act.

The main fabric is black with silver embroidery, cutwork, and rhinestones. Note the cool selvedge treatment. The white satin is for the lining and will show through the cut-outs. I discovered *after* I sewed the whole thing that only one of the selvedges had rhinestones on it. Oh no, I have to add more rhinestones!

Today I make the skirt and maybe tomorrow you’ll even get a peek at the whole thing together.

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Dear Constant Reader,

It may still be summer out there, but in Babydoll-land it’s already autumn. We’ve begun working on The Wrathskellar for this year. For those of you expecting of dark cabaret with its tale of ambition, betrayal, and murder, you’ll be surprised.

This year we are unveiling W. R. Athskellar’s Cavalcade of Curiosities, but you can still call it The Wrathskellar. It’s our most ambitious version yet, combining all of the best elements of past shows: live music, a purpose-built theatre space, a plot, an immersive and interactive experience for the audience, and, of course, burlesque.

We have a lot to do in a very short time. All the acts are brand new and need new choreographies, costumes, props, and set pieces. All the songs are being arranged by our wonderful musical director. I’ll keep you posted as best I can, but it’s going to be a busy month.

For your viewing pleasure, I’ll share few photos from our Kick-off Party, courtesy of John Bilotti. Click right here. (Bonus: how many Babydolls can you spot wearing dresses from Trashy Diva?)

Sometimes the Show Does Not Go On

Dear Constant Reader,

At the moment Boston is being visited by the much-dreaded storm Sandy. However, last night it was just a little rainy and we were all prepared for our penultimate performance of The Wrathskellar.

Then we got the call from the theatre. There was a flood.

Not storm-related at all, but there was a problem with the sewer pipe. All day long we kept getting one message after another – some dire, some positive. I was convinced The Diva’s dressing room had gotten the worst of it — it’s actually the lighting closet and when we were in the theatre in February there was standing water in it. The thought of all the set dressing in there was making me sick — I used my personal collection of vintage and antique dressing table accoutrements.

Finally, we were allowed in to discover the flood had hit right in front of the stage (where the cabaret tables are) and in one of the dressing rooms, but only some personal stuff that was left on the floor got wet. None of our lovely new costumes or set pieces or props or lighting equipment were damaged.

However, there was water trapped in the ceiling and the city said it was unsafe to be in the theatre. We canceled the performance and the cast & crew commiserated at Stately Babydoll Manor over wine and cheese.

I’m hoping with all my hope that the ceiling is drained and repaired in time so we can have our last performance on Halloween as scheduled.

A Miscellany on a Tuesday

Dear Constant Reader,

You have been so patient waiting to hear about the New York Burlesque Festival, but I’m going to make you wait a little longer.

The Wrathskellar finally opened and that means I’ve finally had a chance to breathe. Perhaps I’ll even get back to my usual writing schedule here.

The best review of The Wrathskellar so far comes from the local theatre aficionado and Photoshopper extraordinaire who perpetrates the Sleep No More Crossover Fan Fiction blog: “The Wrathskellar is fucking fantastic. Go see it!”

Normally Wednesdays (that would be tomorrow) are my day for writing book reviews. However, I am completely out of burlesque books to review! Here are the options:

I could get more burlesque books and review them. Please go to my Library and scroll down to the Wish List. Let me know which of those books you’d like me to review. A truly generous soul would send me said book…

I could review books on other related topics, such as vaudeville, dance, beauty, and fashion.

I could review burlesque DVDs, instructional and otherwise.

Faithful readers, I am asking you to let me know what you want to see on Book Review Wednesday and will do whatever you want (within reason).

Yr humble servant,

Almost There

Dear Constant Reader,

Just a quick note. Tonight is our preview/final dress rehearsal for The Wrathskellar and we’ve been busy, busy, busy getting ready. It’s hard to believe we open tomorrow!

As a little treat for you, we’ve been making video diaries of the rehearsal process. You can see some of them here.
