New Apprentices

Dear Constant Reader,

I have been simply terrible about introducing our apprentices to you!

Just to remind you, every six months or so, we have auditions for apprentices — people interested in a more intensive burlesque experience. Apprentices learn routines, costuming, production, &c. Basically whatever we’re able to teach. In exchange, they help us out with shows and things. The apprenticeship usually culminates in a solo act presented in one of our shows.

Some of our apprentices have gone on to be successful performers, like Jeannie Martini and Ingride Denise. Some have even joined the troupe! Both Devastasia and Ava started as apprentices.

Our current apprentices were thrown into the deep end — The Expo — and I’m pleased to say they survived.

You’ll be seeing some of them on stage during Secrets of the Illuminaughty on July 8!

*You might recognize Sharon as part of the group of apprentices who debuted in the opening act of Alice in Underwearland. They also had their solo debut at The Expo, as well as appearing in two group numbers, hosting the Rhinestone Revue, and stage managing The Bordello. And they still wanted to renew their apprenticeship for another term…

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday! Here’s a tip that I should listen to more.

Dream big.

When coming up with a new act or costume or show &c., go wild. Think of the greatest version of what you want to do. Now, it might not be possible due to time, budget, skills, &c., but maybe someday… Scale back and keep your options open in case circumstances change.

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Many folks I know, including Scratch and Ava, are at the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend right now. That event plus yesterday’s missive inspired this week’s tip.

Our Legends are non-renewable resources.

And their numbers are dwindling. Seek them out. Listen to their stories. Learn from them.

In Memoriam: Toni Elling

Dear Constant Reader,

I hate writing these. This one more than most. And it’s taken me so long to figure out what to say.

Toni Elling PhotoToni Elling was the first Legend I met. It was at Miss Exotic World 2006, the first time the event was held in Las Vegas (and the only time I’ve been.) I was sitting by the registration desk, chatting, and this graceful woman came over and said “You look like what we would call an ‘exotic’.” then complimented my outfit and apologized for interrupting. I believe I was speechless beyond “thank you”.

To paraphrase Scratch, when she walked into a room, you looked; when she spoke, you listened (if you were smart). I learned many nuggets of wisdom from her that I still use and gift to my students. At The Expo I was escorting her back to her room after her class on panels. I was planning to head to Willy Barrett’s Delsarte class — I never miss one if I can help it — after I dropped her off. But she she invited me in and started talking. I stayed, of course, delighted for the honor of a private conversation.

Me and Toni EllingI had the fortune and pleasure to see her several times and each time, no matter the circumstances, she always remembered where we had last seen each other and had something kind to say. The last time we spoke, a big group Zoom call for her 92nd birthday, I was sure she wouldn’t remember who I was, but she thanked me for my latest letter, apologized for not writing back, and said she hoped to come to Boston again. Later, it was so painful to learn that her sharp mind was failing her.

She was gracious and graceful and the epitome of class. Recently Scratch shared this story with me. I think it demonstrates well those virtues of hers. When she was the Guest of Honor at The Expo, on Sunday morning, Scratch took her out for a quiet breakfast at a diner not far from our house. Albert had been in our life for just about a year and I think this was the longest we’d been away from him. Scratch was talking about him and Miss Toni must have picked up on the love and worry because she said “I think I’d like to meet this cat of yours.” Scratch brought her to The Manor where I’m sure she and Albert charmed one another.

My heart goes out to all those who are mourning their Mama Toni, especially GiGi Holiday and Lottie Ellington who took such good care of her.

There’s a lovely article about Miss Toni and her legacy in the Detroit Metro Times.

Curtain callFarewell, Satin Doll.

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Happy Friday! I’ve been having a wonderful time working in my garden, but I wouldn’t forget your tip. Here it is!

When cast in a theme or other one-off show, think about the reusability of your act.

Your time and creativity are valuable. Spending a lot of time on an act that you’re only going to perform once is kind of a waste. Throwing one together because you’re never going to perform it again is a disservice to yourself and the audience. Consider how you can create the act to be used in other shows or how you can adjust an existing act or costume you already have to fit the theme.

And while we’re talking about themed shows, mark your calendars for Secrets of the Illuminaughty on July 8 at a redacted location (okay, it’s at Deacon Giles Distillery).

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

It’s a lovely Friday here at The Manor! Mostly because I don’t have to be anywhere — a welcome change from the past six weeks or so.

Here’s your tip!

No idea is stupid.

When trying to come up with a new act or costume or show, there is no such thing as a stupid idea. It may not be feasible for certain reasons — budget, space limitations, technology, your own skills — but maybe it’s a jumping off point. Maybe it’s something you can come back to later when circumstances have changed. Or maybe it’s just a great idea. It took seven years after Brigitte suggested it, but eventually we did have The BeauTease Go Bananaz, the all-banana show and Betty still does one her acts from it, even in non-banana themed circumstances.

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Tomorrow night The BeauTease are appearing in Spring Fling, our post-Expo celebratory show, at Deacon Giles. Get your tickets now because you know how limited seating is! You’ll get to see the act that I performed at Booklover’s Burlesque in Oregon plus a fan dance that has not seen the light of day for many years.

Here’s your tip!

If you are renting a venue and you need to leave it in exactly the same condition and configuration as when you arrived, take lots of photos before you do anything.

Not only will the pictures help your crew return it to the same state, but it also documents any issues that were already there when you took possession (e.g. a cracked mirror).

This tip, like so many, inspired by Scratch.

Hello Again!

Dear Constant Reader,

The past six weeks have been a crazy whirlwind and I want to tell you all about them. However, that will be after I host a Burly-Q Party and perform in Spring Fling with The BeauTease this weekend.  After that I might have a moment or three at my writing desk.

In short:

Booklover’s Burlesque Festival — delightful

Costume-Con 39 — lovely

The Great Burlesque Expo — excellent

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

It’s Friday! Tip time!

Organize your photos and videos.

Decide on a system that works for you and stick with it. Whenever you receive your pictures, take a few minutes to put them in your photo storage place, whether that’s on your computer, on storage media, on-line or somewhere else, but they should all be in the same place, so you always know where to find them.

I make sure each photo can be identified by date, event, and photographer. If I’m feeling really virtuous, I also tag them as “like”, “love”, and “no”.

Like I said, use whatever system works for you, but have a system. If you apply it when the photos come in, it won’t turn into a huge task. You’ll thank yourself later when then images you want are right at your finger tips.

And don’t forget to back them up!

Friday Tip

Dear Constant Reader,

Greeting from San Jose, CA! I’m at Costume-Con this weekend. Two cross-country trips a week apart… I’m not exactly sure how that happened…

Anyhow, here’s your tip!

When measuring yourself for a costume or fitting one, ask a friend for help.

It’s possible, especially of you have an excellent dress form, to do this sort of thing yourself, but it’s always more accurate to do it on your own body. However, if you move, you’re changing your measurements. And you might need to contort yourself pretty seriously to reach parts of your body. I’ve been there. It’s much easier and more accurate to stand still and let someone else get the exact measurements or fit the garment on you.

This tip brought to you by Ava Fox crawling around on the floor Wednesday night after rehearsal to mark the hem on my new costume. My troupemates are the best.
